Numerology Horror: The Thirteenth Edition

Author: Stephanie Against Superstition Witherspoon

The number thirteen has a famous history of bad luck. It all started from friday the thirteenth which is associated with Halloween and now people believe that the number thirteen itself is bad luck. Many hotels and hospitals don’t have a thirteenth floor because of this superstition and if they did I am sure that society would frown upon the hospital.

“Friday the 13th: The Empirics of Bad Luck”, written by Jan Fidrmuc and J. D Tena, compares people born on the thirteenth to people born on the twelfth and fifteenth. The surveys they conducted showed that people born on the thirteenth are less likely to be employed or get married, and they earn lower wages. I believe that people with superstitions about the number thirteen just wake up and assume their day is going to be horrible, and as a result of their thoughts it is. In the netflix series “13 Reasons Why”, the protagonist commits suicide and blames 13 people for her death; for this reason I can see why someone would think the number thirteen is unlucky. One spiritual reason why the number thirteen is considered to be unlucky is because Jesus Christ's had his last supper with the twelve apostles making it thirteen people total. This is unlucky because one of the twelve apostles, Judas Iscariot, betrayed Jesus Christ. Peoplenow avoid having dinner with thirteen people.

Although there are various reasons why the number thirteen is said to be unlucky, I have found positive research. The article “Numerology Of Number 13: Hidden Meanings Behind Thirteen”,suggests that the number thirteen has a powerful message behind it meaning that positive change is on the way. Many people hold on to the superstitious history of the number thirteen, assuming likewise unlucky things to take place in today's society on the thirteenth day.

Triskadekaphobia is very common because people don’t take the time to notice the good signs of the number thirteen.

Love On The Thirteenth Floor by Gerald W. Deas expounds on good things that come from the number thirteen. He focuses on bible books Second Corinthians and Hebrews which only have thirteen chapters. The thirteenth chapter in each book talks about faith, hope, and charity giving people reasons to believe the number thirteen isn’t as unlucky as society makes it out to be. The superstition of the number thirteen is never proven to be true, but it continues to be remembered.

Lauren Garnier published “Why Are We Afraid of Friday the 13th and the Number 13?” asserts that many harsh, biblical events are said to have taken place on a Friday; Jesus was crucified,Eve tempted Adam, Abel was slayed by Cain, and the great floods began. In Britain people were hung on Fridays and citizens in Rome were executed. For these reasons, Friday has a bad history.

Haunting of St. .Augustine, FL

Author: Mya Tribble

Take a closer look at the photograph, as you look just look a tad bit closer in the center of the creepy image. You may be curious to know where the location of this image came from. This image is the haunting of St. Augustine. St Augustine is located in a city on the northeast coast of Florida Lighthouse.  St. Augustine is like a paranormal activity of paradise of the darker side. They have different stories like in the early 1600’s was “Castillo de San Marcos” a commander who found out that his wife was having an affair with another commander then, they both disappeared and were never found again.

The 1700’s “A Second Chance At Life” was a women who was nearly buried alive at the Tolomato Cemetery, went on to live another six years before passing away (again); and now guests have been the ghost of children playing inside the cemetery and heard the sounds of their laughter. The 1800’s two sisters were playing in and out of a car and then, uncontrollable they tumbled down a hill and drowned in the water. The late, 1800’s “The Life of a Criminal” was a building known as the old jail where inmates were treated bad and physically tortured so, now the old jail belongs to the inmates who lost their lives within the prison cells. Then, “The Forever Hospital Patient” it was a Spanish military hospital where, underneath the hospital are thousands of human bones where, people hear the cries, conversations, and screams of patients dying within the hospital’s rooms. Then, another story called “The Bitter End” where, it goes back to the early 1820’s “Huguenot Cemetery where, it was known to be paranormal activities.

The haunting of Huguenot who died. When, he died, and his kids grew up they wanted his body exhumed and moved closer to them. During the exhumation the grave digger left the coffin open while, he was on a break. That’s when, thieves stole his gold tooth. Since, then people have seen him floating around in the air.

Machu Picchu

Author: Niiyonah Kitchings

The Peruvian city, Machu Picchu, was discovered 100 years ago. It was first built in 1450 and then completed in 1460. Also, Machu Picchu is a historic establishment for the Inca Emperor. It was made of heavy granite stones and it is extremely hard to cut even with today’s technology. The city of Machu Picchu is in the midst of a landscape of mountains. It was built to withstand earthquakes that would rattle the town situated on top of two fault lines. In 1911, Hiram Bingham and his fellow crew rediscovered Machu Picchu. The Incas never wanted it to be discovered though. According to skeletal remains, majority of the people who lived there were immigrants from very different backgrounds. They lacked the chemical markers they would have if they had been living there their entire lives. Instead, there was bone damage to different areas of Peru from various species of water parasites. At Machu Picchu the skeletal remains found are unique in their level of natural bone damage from laborious activities. The levels of arthritis and bone fractures differ at Machu Picchu than at the Inca Empire. Most people at Machu Picchu, their levels of arthritis and bone fractures are low. The interesting thing about this is that there the total amounts of skeletons were 135. Bingham took many archaeological findings. Among those archaeological findings there were pottery, jewelry, and human bones. Bingham believed that most of the skeletons he found was 75% females and the other 25% percent were males. 109 skeletons were from females and the last few were from males. The exposed bones do not belong to royal burials, but it is known for belonging to those living and working in the retreat of the emperor at the time when Machu Picchu was abandoned. The abandonment of Machu Picchu was in 1572. Unfortunately, their line of rulers came to an end.

According to the National Geographic, it states, “Machu Picchu is a testament to the power and ingenuity of the Inca empire. Built without the use of mortar, metal tools, or the wheel, Machu Picchu stands as an archaeological wonder of the ancient world” and I find it very interesting that no mortar was used in order to make it steady.

Roanoke Island, North Carolina, United States

Author: Kaylah Ginyard

August 1590 brought the occurrence of one of the most puzzling mysteries in history. As John White arrived too England in order to gather supplies he came across a war between England, Spain, and Queen Elizabeth I. Three years later John White returned to Roanoke. When White left in 1587, he left in his wife and daughter, his infant granddaughter and some other settlers. He came back with no proof or evidence of the colony, including the entirety of his family. The only clue he did discover was the word “Croatoan,” which was carved into a wooden post. The “Lost Colony” is still under investigation, and there are plenty of theories and conspiracies which are laced with what little evidence exists, but science and anthropology have yet to yield an affirmative answer to the question of the “Lost Colony.” Although, “Croatoan” was discovered to be the name of an island South of Roanoke, it was founded to be the home of native Americans. Studies state that perhaps the colonists were killed or abducted by Native Americans.

Oregon Vortex

Author: Sara Vaughn

Early in the 1920’s a land was discovered where one of the best roadside attractions was built. It was finally opened to the public in the 1930’s, this land is now a place where you now go take a visit. John Litster let the attraction be where you can now pay and figure out what the attraction is. John Lister was a geologist and mining in engineer.  Anytime you want to see an attraction the Oregon vortex is a place to take a visit. This could also be known as the “House of Mystery Shack” or “Forbidden Ground” (Oregon Vortex) they have the names because in the early 1920’s the native Americans horses would stop and not go anywhere near the land. This interesting land has been around for so long so now let tourist come see their experiences firsthand.

The Oregon vortex is a great place to take a group of kids to understand illusions and get a great experience what an illusion is. This attraction has open business hours for visitors to come, they can also let you experience how the illusion is viewed. They do this by letting you have a firsthand view of how the illusion works. The attraction is an open place to take classes and they give discounts to school groups or any groups. At the Oregon vortex is appears that it anyone standing towards the “south magnetic” will appear tallest and then if its “magnetic north” they will appear shorter.

The Oregon Vortex has had “FBI investigators” (Grant Butler) use equipment to measure the demensons and the angles or the house. They have figured out some interesting things about this house that a normal house cannot do. According to Grant Butler, in this house a broom at a regular house cannot stand on its own but at the Oregon Vortex it can. Another example they had is instead of a ball rolling downhill, the ball would roll uphill.

The front gate to Madame Talvande's School for Girls
On Legare Street,in Charleston, SC, sits the first house built on the premises. It was Madame Talvande’s School for Girls , a boarding school with a strict headmistress that had no tolerance for boys. One girl at the boarding school found a way around the tight rules of no boys and had an affair. The headmistress became infuriated, to prove her point and insure there were no more affairs she instructed that there be a tall gate be built around the big house on Legare Street. It is to be said that if drive down Legare Street in the dark of night you can see a ghostly woman with a serious face standing behind the gate making sure no boys with trespass to be with her innocent girls.

Death from Above: The Chemtrail Theory

Author: The Non-metal Alchemist

Persistent criss-cross contrails occur over highly trafficked areas with high humidity. By Richard Newstead: described by Anne Marie Helmenstine from thoughtco.com https://www.thoughtco.com/anne-marie-helmenstine-ph-d-601916
The Chemtrail conspiracy theory is an idea which proposes that condensation trails, or “Contrails” for short, which are said to be created by traveling aircrafts from a combination of water vapor and engine exhaust in the sky are, instead, Chemical Trails. These “Chemtrails” as most they are popularly named, are believed to be purposely dropped by military ships themselves for a variety of reasons, most of them being nefarious in nature. While to most people Contrails and Chemtrails may seem identical at a glance, people who subscribe to this theory claim that there are several differences between the two. (however, there are a significant amount of people in this group who believe that Contrails don’t exist. Stating that they are simply a myth the government created in order to explain away the trails.)  Differences that are commonly pointed out include, the “criss-cross” formation that Chemtrails typically appear in, different color hues from regular Contrails, (Thoughtco.“Chemtrails Versus Contrails”) and the duration a perceived Contrail may last. Reasons for the “spraying” of Chemtrails are varied but one commonly agreed upon explanation is that the government is using Chemtrails to control the population and to keep from overpopulating the planet. Other interpretations state that the military is testing chemical weapons, or that Chemtrails can induce some sort of mind control on the public. This theory has also been used to explain the California drought from 2011-2017, (wikipedia.org, “California drought manipulation conspiracy theory”) Dane Wigington, a writer for www.GeoEngineeringwatch.org, explains the motivations for the drought to be economical but doesn’t elaborate as to how this would benefit military pockets.

According to Wikipedia this theory first started to form “after the United States Air Force (USAF) published a 1996 report about weather modification” and were accused of spraying mysterious substance from the sky. These theories started to gain attention online after postings on different forums relating to the topic and gained more popularity as apart of Art Bell’s radio show.  The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) along with FAA, NASA, and NOAA published a response to the rumors in 2000 in which they denied “Chemtrailing” as a whole. This only served to strengthen the conviction of believers in this theory, seeing the response as proof of a government cover-up. (Wikipedia “Chemtrail conspiracy theory”) The USAF later released a fact-sheet in the mid-2000s stressing that “Chemtrails” were a myth in response to a military directive.

According to a poll from Nature has found that 40% of Americans in some capacity believe in the theory, it was also found that 60% of talk about Geoengineering was related to conspiracies like this one. (http://gwagner.com “Solar Geoengineering and the Chemtrails Conspiracy on Social Media”). Multiple purposed experiments of Geoengineering have also met stiff resistance from the believers, even resulting in threats of violence being emailed to scientist and professor such as David Keith. ( TechnologyReview “How one climate scientist combats threats and misinformation from chemtrail conspiracists.”) Proactive members of this conspiracy have made a considerable impact on politics as well, “influencing the Shasta County Board of Supervisors to voted unanimously in favor of a formal inquiry into chemtrail conspiracy claims”, a move that was mocked by major mainstream outlets feverishly. (wikipedia.org, “California drought manipulation conspiracy theory”)

The Axe Man of New Orleans

Author: Musa Kareem

Hell, March 13, 1919, Esteemed Mortal of New Orleans: The Axe Man.They have never caught me and they never will. They have never seen me, for I am invisible, even as the ether that surrounds your earth. I am not a human being, but a spirit and a demon from the hottest hell. I am what you Orleanais and your foolish police call the Axe Man.

This is a supposed quote from the infamous murderer known as the Axe man of New Orleans. If this is a genuine quote, it pretty much sums up the type of person we are dealing with here. Even if this quote isn’t genuine, the events that happened in New Orleans, 1918 through 1919 are creepy enough.

It’s the night of May 23rd, 1918; a couple named Catherine and Joseph Maggio are in their home,419 Magnolia St.and in that night, they became known as the first victims of the Axe Man.The story is the Axe Man crept through the darkness of the Maggio home, knocked the couple with an axe andcuttheir throatswithone of Joseph’s straight razors.Catherine was found almost entirely decapitated, while her husband suffered from multiple severe injuries.Their bodies were discovered by joseph’s brother, who lived with the couple. When the attack was investigated, the only leads that were found was a missing panel from the kitchen door and a bloody axe. This break-in was abnormal because no valuables or money were. The Maggio attack is only beginning of the many disturbing attacks supposedly committed by the Axe Man, some more gruesome or disturbing than others.

On March 10th,1919, the Cortimiglia family was attacked.Charles attempted to protect his family by engaging in a fight with the Axe Man. Charles Cortimiglia would lose that fight and the Axe Man would go on to attacking Charles wife Rose and their two-year-old daughter, Rose. Charles and Rose would survive the attack, but their daughter tragically didnot.Like all the other Axe Man attacks the only thing police found was the bloody axe the attacker used. The attacker was described as dark, tall,heavy-set, wearing a dark suit and a black slouch hat.Three days later, on March 13th, 1919, the letter quoted up above was sent to a New Orleans newspaper called The Times-Picayune.In the letter he would go on to threaten and insult the police. The most sinister thing about this letter is threat aimed towards the citizens of New Orleans.

Undoubtedly, you Orleanians think of me as a most horrible murderer, which I am, but I could be much worse if I wanted to. If I wished, I could pay a visit to your city every night. At will I could slay thousands of your best citizens (and the worst), for I am in close relationship with the Angel of Death.

Now, to be exact, at 12:15 (earthly time) on next Tuesday night, I am going to pass over New Orleans. In my infinite mercy, I am going to make a little proposition to you people. Here it is:I am very fond of jazz music, and I swear by all the devils in the nether region that every person shall be spared in whose home a jazz band is in full swing at the time I have just mentioned. If everyone has a jazz band going, well, then, so much the better for you people. One thing is certain and that is that some of your people who do not jazz it out on that specific Tuesday night (if there be any) will get the axe.

This letter put fear in the hearts of the New Orleans citizens. On the Tuesday mentioned in the letter the people of New Orleans blasted jazz music in their homes and those who didn’t have a record player poured into local jazz clubs, just to stay clear from the Axe Mans wrath. What is interesting is the fact that no one was attacked on that night. The letter would also go on to spark the creation of a jazz song called“Don’t Scare Me Papa,” also known as the mysterious Axe Mans jazz.

October 27th,1919 was the last time the Axe Man attacked someone. He attacked and killed a man named Mike Pepitone. Mike was bashed in the head eight-teen times. He initially survived the attack but died only two hours later. After this the Axe Man seemed to just vanish from the city of New Orleans. He was never caught or even identified.

This number is said to bring about great things for us, challenge us, and even judge us. For sacrifice of an animal the bible states that they must be at least the age of seven before they are able to be sacrificed. (What is the Biblical Significance of the Number Seven).

When looking into the make of our world it is made of 7 seas and 7 continents. If you look into studies there are originally eight planets, but some do not think of Jupiter as a plant which takes it down to seven. When thinking of a rainbow, colors are usually all a person thinks of and the acronym “ROY G BIV” which is for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet but take into thought the number of letters there are seven right? When Isaac Newton first thought of the colors there were only five but later two were added. Anna Pukas the author of Express describes the world’s seven wonders: the Machu Picchu, Chichen Itza, Colosseum, the Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, the statue of Christ, and the rock city of Petra. (Anna Pukas, The Magnificent 7)

The number seven will forever be the number of the world, and the luckiest of them all. When first used for the simplest of things no one thought it would have the reoccurrence it does. Randomly asking someone to give facts or information about this number the responses would mostly consist of the obvious, it is a prime odd number that is only divisible by itself. There are deeper ways of thinking into this number with interesting concepts and theories that relate together in creating our world the such a distinctive number.

Wendigo

Author: Elizabeth Hadwin

From Lost Tapes
Is Wendigo only a myth or is it really a cannibalistic humanoid creature waiting in the forest for its next victim? Wendigo is a horrifying creature of the Algonquian Native American legend, that devours human flesh during harsh winters. Wendigo is a fearsome beast with a gruesome appearance. The creature is described as having long limbs, ash colored skin, and extremely thin. Most are said to be without hair (due to malnutrition). Although in the colder regions, the Wendigo is said to have thick snow-white hair that is matted with blood and other gore. Its hands are withered and bony with sharp claws for tearing a person apart with a single touch (Geller, “Wendigo (Folklore) -Terrifying Monster”). Some of the most extensive and numerous of the Native American groups, The Algonquian, once lived along the Atlantic Coast and the Great Lakes Region. However, they are also found in legends of other Native American tribes. The word, “Wendigo” means “the evil spirit that devours mankind.” No matter how much flesh and bones the creatures eat they are always remaining hungry. Legends say that Wendigoag were once human beings. From the most popular version of the story, when a person resorts to cannibalism they form into a Wendigo. When the human flesh is consumed, it is believed that they are being overcome by the evil spirit and are in the process of transformation. At the beginning of the 20th century, Jack Fiddler, an 87-year-old Cree man was tried for the murder of a Cree woman. He claimed he was defending himself because the women were on the verge of transforming into a Wendigo, and she had to be killed before she killed the other members. (“The Wendigo: A Terrifying Beast with an Insatiable Hunger for Human Flesh”)The tale is often seen as a warning that is told to prevent people from engaging in immoral behaviors. It is also served as a metaphor to help better understand terrible acts committed by other people that can’t be understood otherwise (Geller, “Wendigo (Folklore) -Terrifying Monster”). According to some settlers’ versions of the Wendigo, if someone saw the Wendigo it would be a signal of death in their community. The Wendigo was claimed to be seen numerous times near a town called Roseau in Northern Minnesota in the 1800’s through the 1920’s. Every time a person would report the sighting, an unexpected death would occur. There are many who still believe the Wendigo is still roaming in the woods and prairies of northern Minnesota and Canada. Don’t doubt the Wendigo stories because many of the encounters and legends have been around since before man walked through these forests. The legends had to have come from somewhere and somehow, didn’t they?(“THE WENDIGO”)

Elizabeth McCauley, an intern for the blog Backstory, writes in this article how the Wendigo is misrepresented. She believes the Wendigo legends are not told correctly. She asked the readers if they have ever heard of the show Supernatural or are a fan of Stephen King, but do you really know where the Wendigo is from?
