The Sleeping Prophet: Edgar Cayce

Amiya Waiters

Picture of Edgar Cayce

Edgar Cayce was an astounding clairvoyant earning him titles such as a prophet or what he is more well known as being is the “The Sleeping Prophet.” Most of Edgars psychic readings were done in his sleep. There are over 14,306 documented psychic readings done by Cayce. Edgar Cayce was born into a middle class christian family in Hopkinsville Kentucky. His psychic reading abilities began to appear as early as his childhood. As a child Edgar, would get visions while sitting in the woods after reading his bible.  After the death of his grandfather he reported spotting him regularly around the farm. He would often play with “imaginary friends” which would he would say were spirits from the other side.

Edgar Cayce as a young adult from

Later on he would soon come to find, by putting himself into a dream like state, in which he could come in contact with time in space; or the universal conscious. In this state one would ask Edgar questions as broad as “what are the secrets to the universe?” to as specific as “what can I do to solve this cold?” Edgar his responses would usually be specific and offer practical help. His psychic readings ranged from the economy, to health, relationships, government things, helping with loved ones, and other things. His sole purpose when it came to his gift, even as early as childhood, was too help those around him.
This being said he was often compared to another great prophet known as Nostradamus. Edgar and Nostradamus both started off as physicians and spent most of their lives helping and healing others.  Edgar Cayce also prophesied the deaths of presidents, wars, diseases and their cures, along with natural disasters, and predicted the rise of the ancient civilization Atlantis. Edgar Cayce often did the impossible when it came to ailments of the body. One man was never to walk again once he broke his leg. Cayce told doctors to insert a nail into the knee cap of the man. It proved successful and was considered the first time a nail had been used to cure an ailment. His wife Gertrud was even diagnosed with cancer and the doctors told him that she would not survive. Though through following his step by step instructions she was cured of the disease. He also predicted WWII and once it began he tried his best to help those who sent him letters asking of the well-being of their loved ones. This went from two readings in a day to seven or eight a day. Doing these readings took an immense amount of energy and was very taxing on the body. Even so he continued to help and suffered a stroke in September of 1944 and later died in January 4,1945 in Virginia Beach.

The Scoop on The Bermuda Triangle

Erin L. Wright

Bermuda Triangle (map)

The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil’s Triangle, is bounded by Miami, Florida, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the Bermuda Island. Writer, Vincent Gaddis, came up with the name of this place. The Bermuda Triangle was, and still is, vastly known for its mysterious disappearances of aircrafts and ships. No one can explain this phenomenon, although many try.

One theory suggests that methane gas trapped under the ocean floor erupts, which lowers the water density, causing the ships to sink. Another theory suggests that it may be an electronic fog that interferes with the ships radio instruments, causing the captain to lose control of the ship, crash, and slowly sink to the bottom. Others say it is a black hole that sucks in the passing ships and planes and some say that it is purely witchcraft. Some, like I, think it does not even exist and that it is merely a hoax. Researchers have spent decades searching for the “truth” about the Bermuda Triangle, but they have still to this day come up with anything solid. According to Michelle Radcliff, the Bermuda Triangle is still fairly active. Christopher Colombus was supposedly the first person to experience strange things such as instrument malfunctions in 1492. The earliest known report of the first disappearing was in 1812, on a ship named Patriot and the latest report of an incident was allegedly in 2015 when the SS El Faro fell victim to the The Bermuda Triangle. There have reportedly been witnesses and survivors of these incidents. Cary Gordon Trantham, a survivor in a 1995 incident, reported encountering strange things while flying over the area as well. She has a page called www.bermudatriangle.com and there you can read her sightings and see videos and pictures.

The image above breaks down the information about the Bermuda Triangle quickly and easily. It tells you its location and shares a few facts and theories listed in this article.

The Hampton Lillibridge House: The Most Haunted House in America

Cayla Nunnley

The Hampton Lillibridge House, located in Savannah, Georgia, was built in 1796. The house was originally owned by Hampton Lillibridge, but after his death his wife remarried and sold their home. In 1963, the house was purchased by Jim Williams, where he moved the home onto East St. Julian Street. Williams hired people to work on the house and strange things started to happen. Tools would disappear and or move across the room. There were reports of “mocking-like” laughter and sounds of footsteps throughout the house. Regardless of these paranormal activities, Williams continued to move into the house. While the house was vacant and being restored, many neighbors reported seeing shadowy figures of people in the windows, a woman screaming, singing, and dancing figures in the windows. Williams invited some of his friends over one afternoon, when they began hearing footsteps upstairs. Only one of them was brave enough to investigate. When he hadn’t returned they went in search for him, only to find him laid out, completely paralyzed with fear. He reported that when he walked into the room it was as if he was submerged into a pool of ice-cold water. He then felt a force that tried to push him down the chimney shaft and the only thing he could do to avoid his certain death was to drop to the floor.

Hampton Lillibridge from Crime Library on Vimeo.
Jim Williams finally had an exorcism performed on the house, on December 7, 1963, by the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia. The exorcism remained ineffective. Within a week the paranormal activities began again, ready for vengeance. Williams had finally had enough and decided to look into a paranormal researcher. He found Hans Holzer, a famous paranormal researcher, who had confirmed that numerous unearthly presences in the home. Unfortunately he was unable to make them go away but he was able to write a book about Williams house, titled The Phantoms of Dixie.

There are many questions as to how the house became haunted in the first place. Did Hampton Lillibridge and his wife experience any paranormal activities in 1796? The house could have become haunted when a young sailor, who had lived in the house before Jim Williams, committed suicide and his spirit still remains in the house. The paranormal activities could also be due to the crypt they found under the house during relocation. The workers said it was made of tabby; half filled with water, and had assumed it was from colonial times. They reburied it and never investigated any further.

The book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, by John Brendt, tells the story of Jim Williams’s four trials for the murder of Danny Hansford in May, 1981. Between trials, Williams had asked for the assistance of a local occult practitioner named Minerva, to join his legal defense team. It was odd that Williams knew about Minerva because he never seemed to have placed faith in spell-craft. It was especially strange because Williams nearly twenty years before Hansford’s murder, Williams was completely familiar with hauntings, exorcisms, and paranormal activities. Haunted Savannah, a book by James Caskey, explains that maybe it wasn’t so weird that Jim Williams wanted Minerva on his team. He couldn’t beat them in 1963, so he joined them 20 years later.

The Queen Mary

Michael Dunbar

The Queen Mary

TheQueen Mary  ship is a museum and also a hotel now is located in Long Beach, California known for its grand size along with its number of rumored hauntings on the ship. According to Chavdar Chanev of the online articles RMS Queen Mary the Queen Mary has a twin sister ship named Queen Elizabeth which both were commissioned by the Navy to oppose the ocean liners built in Germany and France during the World War II period. The ship which was built and sailing in the 1930s was known to be bigger than the great Titanic. In 1967 the ship was withdrawn from service with thousands of transatlantic voyages then turned to a maritime museum and hotel located in Long Beach, California. During the ships time under ceased service during World War II gave shelter too over 800,000 troops and was known for carrying the most people ever on a floating vessel which was 16,683 according to Kathy Weiser from Legends of America. Along history The Queen Mary’s hotel guests had bad life ending accidents while staying on board which made the ship their last living place on earth. This would create a great amount of reporting’s from residents on board the ship of unexpected interaction with spirits during their time spent there. Information from Planet Paranormal portrays that the rumors of ghost are true because this source provides evidence such as audio and visual evidence that has been captured on the ship by investigators. Background information from Kathy Weiser on some of the ghosts that are still haunting the vessel that have been encountered is a little girl named Jackie who drowned in one of the second level pools during the ships sailing days and to this day her spirit refuses to move on. Other sightings such as in the ship’s first-class lounge, a beautiful young woman in an elegant white evening gown has often been seen dancing alone in the shadows of the corner of the room. Also while researchers who would investigate the lower part of the ship heard horrid screams and sounds of colliding ships. Further research from Tom Crawford of Ghost Source and Portal to the Paranormal provides insight that Queen Mary collided with a smaller British ship, the H.M.S. Curacao, causing the ship and its three hundred passengers to sink. Some investigators would say that the screams and hauntings are being created by the three hundred men who were killed. Many more sightings, accidents, and activity has happened along Queen Mary voyages. This is why it’s one of the top tourist attractions known today.

The Haunted Hospital of Death

Darshawna Barnes-Mack

Considered one of the most haunted places in America the Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville Kentucky, is known for its horrific history of patient abuse , and it’s eerie hauntings that take place throughout the building. Be it from the open window mezzanine, to it’s death tunnel , to the haunted 5th  , and finally to the infamous suicide room (502).  The Waverly Hills Sanatorium is place full of sorrow and unsatisfied spirits. It was first built in 1924 to combat the sudden rise in America’s  tuberculosis outbreak . Unfortunately it didn't stay open for long because rumors of patient abuse found it’s way into society so it was shut down. It came back in 1926 and medical conditions did not change instead it got worse. Many medical professionals considered open air to be remedy for the red disease so nurses would sit the weakly patients on an open air patio which seemed fine , until it became winter and patients were sitting in frigid conditions. Along with this abuse many doctors experimented with a procedure where patients were cut open and three of their ribs were removed so that a balloon could be inserted into their lungs. Along with being cut open patients would experience their lungs being exposed to ultraviolet light for hours on end.
Patients sitting in the patio while the sun and cold air were “ healing them.”

Along with this facility housing the sick it also housed the mental . Especially the mental people who had contracted tuberculosis. In 1928 The Waverly Hills Sanatorium officially took in the mental and to not mix the sick with the mental, the mental were stored away on the fifth floor. Which leads to the first and most horrific event that happened at the facility. In 1928 a nurse had an affair with a doctor out of wedlock while at the sanatorium. Due to this she became pregnant and she later contracted tuberculosis. Society in those day shunned her not only for being with child out of wedlock but also with having the disease so she used a light bulb hanging on and single wire in the middle of the room and she hung herself.

This was one of many deaths at the Waverly according to  the article The Haunted Hospital by mental floss.com,  it said that over 64,000 people died at the Waverly. Depression was huge factor between patients and doctors didn’t want their morals  to sink even lower by the recurrent deaths, so they built what is now known as the body chute . It was originally built underneath the hill so that workers could walk into the tunnel verses uphill to get to work, but directors of the facility used it to transport the dead in secret. Bodies were thrown in the chute which lead to a tunnel that would take them to the back end of the bottom of the hill where a hearse would collect the bodies. This part of the facility was seen as so horrific that in 2005 there was a movie inspired by it. (Death Tunnel)
Tunnel used to smuggle bodies out of the facility , from suspecting patients.

With all of these deaths the sanatorium was shut down but it is said that the spirits still roam and take control over the building .Examples of this would be when it closed down in 1961 and reopened as Woodhaven Geriatrics Sanitarium , which was used as a elderly care home. Once again multiple deaths of the elderly were accounted for and rumors of shock therapy surfaced to the public so once again it was shut down in 1982. After that people saw it as a bad omen so it stayed closed until 1996 where  Robert Alberhasky wanted to tear it down and make it into the largest statue of Jesus in the world. When he was turned down by the government to destroy the building he went ahead and tried to bulldoze the building , but the strangest thing happened. The building stayed in tact, it would not break down or crumble at all. After that event it stayed closed from 2001 to present day. With this said it doesn’t mean that civilians can’t go inside . The building offers haunted tours to visitors, and it happily lets ghost specialist and crew come and inspect the place  to check for hauntings . For example as seen on the show Ghost Hunters: Season 2 Episode 14
the  Ghost Hunter crew witnessed dark shadows coming towards their cameras, voices whispering to them, strange smells , and objects being thrown from various places. Because of this they deemed it haunted and many others who visited agree.

As far as Hauntings go there are many strange events and characters that happen at  facility. As told before there was the suicide of the nurse in room 502 and it is said that her ghost still haunts that room ,but along with her there is an even more insidious figure known as the Creeper
who roams the hall of the sanatorium. No one knows how he died or why he is still there but it is said that he crawls around and his presence gives the visitor a very frigid and morbid aura.(Creeper) The next hauntings are the children said to have died there. One was Timmy a boy who died there , but the one who is more prevalent is Mary . They are seen as harmless and they play around on the 5th floor. Those are some of the hauntings but there have been many more. As far as the Waverly Hill Sanatorium goes it was place full of dead spirits that were abused , mutilated and all around depressed it is seen as a fortress of evil and it will forever been seen as one of the most haunted place in America.

The First Saint Louis Cemetery, (New Orleans)

Brandon Hill
This is an overview picture of the first Saint Louis Cemetery

“Save Our Cemeteries” explains the first Saint Louis Cemetery. The cemetery was established in 1789. New Orleans is the city where the spooky cemetery can be found. It is the oldest cemetery in New Orleans, and is said to be the spookiest. The Cemetery was divided into three different sections at first. There was a section for the Catholics, Non-Catholics, and Negros. The cemetery is not divided today, it has had reconstruction to make it bigger. The Cemetery contains some important people to the State of Louisiana. Maria Laveau, the famous voodoo queen is buried in the cemetery. The first black mayor of New Orleans Ernest Nathan Morial, is also buried here. The cemetery is very important because it has a lot of value to it. The tombs of the people buried there are fascinating. Most tombs are decorated with something, or has drawings on it to remember the person.

In “Maria Laveau: A Nineteenth
Century Voudou Priestess” Carolyn Long, explained the importance of Maria Laveau. She has one of the more famous tombs people enjoy looking at. A lot of people say they do not know whether she was actually in there or not, but they continue to visit it and decorate it. She usually has Mardi gras beads hanging from her tomb, along with other items on the ground. Maria Laveau was the queen of voodoo in the city of New Orleans. She was said to be a great voodoo practitioner, and anybody who practiced voodoo looked up to her. Many people go to Maria Laveau’s tomb to practice voodoo, the marking of the X, on her tomb is a sign of voodoo. People mark X’s on the tomb as a sign of respect to her. People have said they have heard the ghost of Maria Laveau, which would absolutely creep me out, but that makes Maria Laveau’s tomb interesting along with the X’s and items left on her tomb.

On the website French Quarter Phantoms
, it gives great information about touring the first Saint Louis Cemetery. The tour of the cemetery looks very interesting. Personally, I would not take a tour to the cemetery because it would be scary and weird. I would encourage people who are interested in this type of information to take the tour. I think a lot of important information is given throughout the tours, and it would be an exciting adventurous trip. The tour is centered to take people throughout the entire cemetery. It is about one mile and it lasts for two hours. There are a lot of different tombs to look at. There are plaques located on some of the tombs to tell their accomplishments, and how they were significant to Louisiana. A tour would be helpful if you wanted to know about the first Saint Louis Cemetery because you could have your own personal experience.

On the website, Find A Grave there is an article explaining Ernest Morial. Ernest Morial was the first African American mayor of New Orleans. He was also a leading civil rights advocate. Ernest Morial created black history by becoming the first African American mayor of New Orleans. Becoming the mayor may have encouraged other African American males to become successful. Once he became mayor, African Americans probably looked at him as a role model. Ernest Morial, also spoke up as a leader, by becoming a leading civil rights advocate. Which means he wanted equal opportunity for minority groups. He was fighting for everybody to have equal rights, and I would say he was successful along with others. Today, we all have equal opportunity to do what we want, and speak our opinion. Ernest Morial was initially buried in the first Saint Louis Cemetery, but for spacing issues his tomb was moved. The first Saint Louis Cemetery is not only popular because of voodoo queens, but for individuals who created a way for equal rights.

In the article, “The Spirit Of New Orleans Will Haunt You” by Tanya Wragg. She explains why New Orleans is portrayed as spooky. The streets of New Orleans is said to have had its legends of vampires, witches, and voodoo priestesses wandering them. The city of New Orleans has a various selection of spooky tours. There is a ghost expedition bus ride, which is a tour given to investigate paranormal activity. I think the tour would be pretty cool, but scary. The tour is said to be intense, because a person must be mentally, emotionally, and physically ready to experience a physiologically experience. They say this because spirits can mess with peoples mind. People may start to see ghost, or think they are hearing ghost after they have been on the tour. In my opinion, that could drive a person insane. New Orleans still has an original plantation, which can still be visited on a tour. The tour takes people over the Mississippi River, directly to the Laura Plantation. Visiting a plantation would be scary to me, because I think spirits sit at plantations. I think spirits sit at plantations because the plantation was their home. New Orleans has an abundance of spooky things, along with the Saint Louis Cemetery tour. The tours defiantly portray New Orleans as spooky.

In this video, the LaLaurie mansion is explained. This portrays more about why New Orleans is considered spooky and haunted.

Cry Baby Bridge

Rylie Thurman

Throughout the United States there are lots of “Cry Baby Bridges” each one has their own legend behind it but they all relate to a incident with a mother and her baby.

In the article the, bridge in South Carolina just north of Pageland claims to have a Cry Baby Bridge. This tells a story about a women and her new born baby. The story is that the women and her baby were one the way back home one night and she was extremely tired and ready to get home because her husband was coming home the next day from fighting in a war and she was ready to see him. The next thing she knew she took the turn around the bridge to fast and she soon realized that her baby had been thrown from the car. She was looking and looking and couldn’t find her baby but could hear him. The baby’s cry got faint and she couldn’t find him. It is said that if you go to the bridge at night time and turn your car off, you will hear the cry of the baby.

In Wood Bridge, New Jersey there is a legend that goes along with there Cry Baby Bridge that there was a couple who just had a baby and the man got very jealous that his wife was showing the baby more attention and ended up throwing the baby off of the bridge and killing his wife. The legend says that if you go to the bridge in New Jersey you will hear the ghost of the baby cry and feel your car move like someone is pushing it.

In Saraland, Alabama the Cry Baby Bridge and is said to be one of the most haunted places in America. The story is that a plantation owner caught his wife in the arms of his biggest and strongest slaves. When the women found out that she was going to have the slaves child, she carried the baby until full term and then drowned the baby in the creek under the bridge. Its said that the ghost of the women and child are still heard.

In Millington, Maryland the legend goes there was a teenager girl who was about to become a mother and right when she had the baby, she found out that he had deformed legs. She took the baby to the bridge and tossed him over. It is said now that he is a ghost with very strong legs, knocking over trees with his crying fits. All of the trees that have fallen in the area are blamed on the ghost. There has been people with experiences with this bride, such as their car not wanting to start and hearing gurgling sounds in the water below.
This image was caught by a person who has visited this bridge in Maryland.

In Aiken, South Carolina where I attend college there is said to be a Cry Baby Bridge, the story is that the mother killed her baby because she thought the child was interfering with her and her husband. I think it would be cool to go visit to see if one of these bridges is really haunted.

The Haunting of Willard Library

reco_freako

Have you ever felt a spooky or creepy sensation following you in a library? Well the infamous Willard Library is the place that has those same effects on other people. Willard’s Library is in Evansville, Indiana. The spooky sensation I am referring to is The Grey Lady of Willard’s Library. In this instance, every ghost is not here to cause havoc but she just wanders. Willard Library is designed the library in a Victorian Gothic style; this style of narrow shapes and ornamentation emphasizes height. Famous examples of Victorian Gothic styles would be Notre Dame in Paris and Chartres Cathedral in Chartres, France. It is the oldest library in the state of Indiana, it contains a treasure trove of local historical archives and genealogy materials.

The Grey Lady was first reported in the late 1930’s by a custodian. It is said to believe that Louise Carpenter, daughter of William Carpenter, is the ghost of the library. William was the man who gave most of his life earnings to support the library. She was very angry and sued the library for her father’s estate, bust she lost. People of Evansville say she held a grudge against the library and trustees, give the reason that she might haunt the library. Louise died in 1908, in Newark, NJ, 29 years before the first reported sighting of the Grey Lady. Psychics have been to the library; some have said it was Louise but others say it’s not. One psychic went in to a trance when she went into the library. A trance is a half-conscious state characterized by an absence of response to external stimuli, typically as induced by hypnosis or entered by a medium. She was in a trance so long her husband had to coax her out. She says the ghost is not Louise, although Margaret Maier described her correctly. She says she communicated with the ghost although the ghost could not speak. The psychic says the ghost was overwhelmed with grief, maybe a loss of a loved one. In the distance, she saw a small child near a body of water. She is implying that the way the ghost responded to her, it could not be Louise, who had a grudge held against the library and may have had bad intentions if she was the ghost.

The 23 Enigma

Desiree Walker

The 23 Enigma refers to the belief that most events and incidents are directly connected to the number 23. Robert Wilson cites William Burroughs as being the first person to believe in the 23 enigma. Burroughs had known a captain by the name of Clark, around 1960 in Tangier, he once bragged that he’d sailed for 23 years without an accident. That same day, Clark’s ship had gotten into an accident that killed him and everyone else on board. While Burroughs was thinking about this harsh example of the Gods. That same evening, a radio announced the crash of an airliner in Florida. The pilot was another captain Clark and the flight was 23.

William S Burroughs was a beat generation writer known for his startling, nontraditional accounts of drug culture. He was named after his grandfather, an inventor who was a pioneer in machine technology. Burroughs attended prep schools and later studied English literature at Harvard University, he graduated in 1936. At one point, he became financially unstable, and had other issues. So he went to London, got help and continued to be an innovator, after that, he put out a few more books. Soon after, he came across the 23 enigma.
Some examples of the 23 enigma include but are not limited to. In each human there are normally 23 pairs of chromosomes. 22 of these pairs look the same in both men and women. The 23rd pair is the sex chromosome and that is different for men and women. Women have two X chromosomes while men have one X and one Y chromosome. 2. Julius Caesar was stabbed to death 23 times by enemies in the Roman Senate. 3. Psalm 23 is the most famous and quoted of the Psalm. 4. One of the many conspiracy theories about the terrorist attacks known as 9/11 is that the numbers involved in the date add up to be 23.

The Bray Road Beast
Bray Road in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, is described to be a very peaceful, beautiful, quiet area. It’s mainly just woods on this road, but theses woods is the home of the Beast of Bray Road. This beast is described as a cryptid which is an animal that cryptozoologist believe is real but has not been discovered yet.

This beast has been called hairy humanoid, shapeshifter, bigfoot and also a werewolf. The Bray Road Beast has been spotted in Wisconsin number of times. The first encounter of the Bray Road Beast was in1936. Although it has been label as a werewolf, no one has actual seen it transform. The first report of the beast was in 1991 by a lady named Doristine Gipson.  Doristine was driving down the Bray Road and while she was changing her radio station felt a bump up under her car. She got out and checked the rear of the car to see if she had hit anything, but she did not see anything. Doristine then checked her surrounds, but she did not see anything. As she started towards the woods, she saw something hairy charge towards her. Doristine ran back to her car and as she was driving away the creature jumped on the trunk of her car but it fell off. The next day, Halloween night, she returned back to Bray Road with a little girl that she had been taking trick-or-treating. She told the little girl to stay in one spot while she went to the She seen the creature again and drove away.

Is it Human?

Doristine was not the only one to see the beast. Lori Enddrizzi and Tom seen the beast after Doristine. Lori had informed her mother that she thought she had seen a werewolf and her mother believed her. She explained to her mother that her first impression of the beast was a human from the beast backside. Once Lori past the animal, she slowed down to look at the beast in her rear mirror. She said that the beast was holding its food like how a human would.

Although this creature was spotted on Bray Road, Tom claimed that he seen it two times on Route 106,which is still in Wisconsin. He also said the lit left a scratch on his car. There are many more reports and new articles about the beast. No one knows exactly if it’s a human, a wolf or a werewolf. It’s up to you whether you believe or not.
