Locals are left scratching their heads in astonishment and awe at this strange phenomenon where chunks of raw flesh fall from the sky. The Kentucky Meat Rain is still a mysterious and intriguing natural phenomenon, despite a plethora of theories and ideas regarding its cause.

The first Kentucky Meat Rain was observed by the nice people of Olympia Springs, Kentucky, in 1876. This is where our voyage into the world of meaty precipitation began. People were in complete disbelief as various types of meat, including venison and steak, appeared to fall from the sky. The tale quickly became viral, igniting a flurry of interest and ideas about the meaty downpour.

Meat showers persisted in appearing in different locations around Kentucky in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Even more, a report from the 1876 incident said that the meat parts were "large irregularly shaped flakes, one of which was 6 by 8 inches in size."

Numerous theories, ranging from the serious to the absurd, have been proposed on the Kentucky Meat Rain:

Vultures and other scavengers dumping meat: A few scientists hypothesized that meat was being dropped by vultures and other birds while they were in the air. This theory, however, isn't entirely credible because it seems improbable that birds could carry about such large amounts of meat.

Prank or hoaxes: A few doubters speculated that these instances may have been the work of neighborhood jesters or pranksters. Despite the possibilities of pranks and hoaxes, numerous reliable witnesses attest that these incidents actually happened.

Some scientists believe that meat from farms or slaughterhouses may have been picked up by tornadoes or waterspouts, which then dropped the meat into the air.

Scientists are still puzzled by the Kentucky Meat Rain,
which also manages to enchant the general public. Although many theories have
been proposed, none of them have really solved the mystery. It's critical to
keep in mind that most weather events are well-researched and understood and
that these meaty showers are incredibly uncommon. The field of meteorology is
made more whimsical by the Kentucky Meat Rain. Even though the mystery is still
unsolved, it serves as a reminder of how delightfully strange our natural world
can be. Who knows as science moves forward? Perhaps one day we'll figure out
what causes the Kentucky Meat Rain. Up until that point, it remains a
distinctive and peculiar aspect of American folklore that keeps us all in the
dark.

Works Cited

Duckworth, Matthew, “‘Kentucky Shower of Flesh’: The ‘Great Kentucky Meat Shower’ fell 147 years ago” Fox56News. article talks about how Phineas Gage was just a young man who was very
good at his job and always knew what to do and how to do it. Phineas was born in New Hampshire, and he was also raised there. By the time Gage was 25 he had become an incredibly talented blasting foreman that worked for railroad companies. Gage had been doing his job for years, so he was familiar with what he was doing, and he felt confident about it. Blasting rocks back in 1848 was risky, but Gage took the risk every day because he was experienced and skilled at the task.
Gage was using his Iron tamping rod to pack the explosives powder into
the hole and as he was packing it, the powder detonated sending the rod
flying upward. When the rod came down it penetrated right through his
left cheek and tore through his brain and exited through his skull
before sending him 80 feet away. After all of
this, Gage still lived, he laid there for a while, but he was
conscious. Eventually he got up and started walking, everyone was
helping him and making sur he was okay, they could not believe that he was even conscious. Phineas of course had to be seen by doctors so they could treat him.

This picture shows how the iron rod was positioned in Phineas Gage

The story of the "Crichton Leprechaun" quickly became famous world wide, and is considered to be one of the worlds first viral videos (Toole, Connor. “Why the ‘Alabama Leprechaun’ Is Still the Best Video in Internet History 15 Years after It Came Out.” BroBible, 17 Mar. 2021). The people of Alabama recognized the fame that the news story brought to their state, in fact, the business owners of Alabama immediately understood how the story of the Crichton Leprechaun could be used for the benefit of their business.

Every year on around St. Patrick's day, statues of the Crichton Leprechaun are placed outside of these businesses, and merchandise featuring the amateur sketch of the leprechaun are sold. The success that businesses see from the use of the Crichton Leprechaun have been prevalent for years, but more recently the question of whether or not those business owners should continue to profit from the use of the Crichton Leprechaun has been asked among the individuals of Alabama more and more. People have discovered that a majority of the business owners that have profited from poking fun at the story of the Crichton Leprechaun are white, and many African American's residing in Alabama aren't too comfortable with the idea of white business owners gaining benefits by joking about a story that originated in an African American community. Crichton, Alabama is a city that is made up mostly of individuals that are African American, and most of these business owners do not live anywhere near Crichton so to many individuals who do live in Crichton, it appears strange that they are the main ones benefiting from it's success instead of the people who actually do live in Crichton (Harris-Marshall, Sharonda. “It’s Time to Retire the Crichton Leprechaun.” Medium, 4 June 2021).

It is evident that the Crichton Leprechaun has benefited the people of Alabama, but whether or not it has benefited the right group of people is still a question that people are trying to answer. Many people worry if the Crichton Leprechaun's lingering impact has negatively impacted the way that people view the African American individuals of Alabama to this day, as many people have concerns regarding the old, and harmful stereotypes about the education of African Americans and whether or not it is as good as their white peers (Brantley, Mike. “TV’s Bill O’Reilly Asks: Is Crichton Leprechaun News Story Racist?” Al, 30 July 2009). While the Crichton Leprechaun is a funny story and should be recognized as such, it is important to consider the individuals who really deserve this recognition, as well as the individuals who actually should be benefiting from the fame the news segment has in the long run.

Work Cited:

Brantley, Mike. “TV’s Bill O’Reilly Asks: Is Crichton Leprechaun News Story Racist?” Al, 30 July 2009

Harris-Marshall, Sharonda. “It’s Time to Retire the Crichton Leprechaun.” Medium, 4 June 2021

Team, WDSU Digital. “‘where Da Gold at?’ Viral Mobile Leprechaun Video Turns 15 Years Old.” WDSU, 24 June 2021 (Image)

Toole, Connor. “Why the ‘alabama Leprechaun’ Is Still the Best Video in Internet History 15 Years after It Came Out.” BroBible, 17 Mar. 2021
Dr.Ms.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01028734989910515370noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1595531248189694146.post-21249404858988691852023-12-16T13:00:00.000-08:002023-12-16T13:00:32.178-08:00Dancing Mania or Dancing Plague
Author: Glenn Tafe

The “Dancing Plague of 1518” was an event in which hundreds of citizens of Strasbourg, France danced uncontrollably and apparently unwillingly for days on end. The mania was said to have lasted for two months. The plague started when a women by the name Frou Troffea walked into the street and began dancing erratically, and seemed unable to stop. She kept dancing and soon collapsed from exhaustion. After taking a break she began dancing again and continued this way for days. The number of dancers began to increase, and the civic and religious leaders theorized that more dancing was the solution. They arranged for spaces for dancers to dance in, musicians, and professional dancers to help the afflicted continue dancing. It only worsened the contagion, and more than 400 people died because of the compulsion. Theories of the plague were that the afflicted may have eaten bread made from rye flour which contained a very dangerous fungal disease called ergot. Other theories include demonic possession, overheated blood, etc.

In this video posted by HistoryPod, he describes the history of the mania, and how it spread in the German city of Aachen. The people of the city began suddenly dancing in the streets and didn’t stop for weeks on end. Other names for the mysterious dancing include St John’s Dance, St Vitus’ Dance, or the ‘dancing plague’. Many of the victims danced until exhaustion, and foamed at the mouth and twitched their limbs until they recovered only to begin dancing again. Some died of injuries sustained from the dance, others died of cardiac arrest. Some speculated the cause of the ‘dancing plague’ was religion or punishment from Saints John or Vitus who were closely associated with both the cause and the cure. People also thought that the dancers were members of cults performing rituals. Its been noted that the disappearance of the outbreaks curiously coincided with the spread of Protestantism and its rejection of the veneration of saints.

In Aachen, Germany, in 1374, the worst outbreak of dancing mania was recorded. It was said to have spread to towns in Belgium and the Netherlands along the Rhine River. Many villagers danced in the streets to music nobody else could hear. The dancers seemed as if they were stuck in a trance, unable to control themselves. Some dancers screamed, and cried out in pain, but couldn’t stop. The dancing mania went on for weeks, affecting thousands of people. One theory of what caused the plague was the ergot fungus which grows on rye and grains. One of the key chemical components of ergot is lysergic acid, which is the ‘LS’ in LSD. This has been known to cause delusion, and hallucinations. Another theory was psychogenic illness or mass hysteria, which is a contagion of an idea or belief can spread through a population, usually during times of stress. Although many scientists, and psychologist have expressed their theories on the cause of the plague, “The Mystery of the Medieval Dancing Plague” is still unsolved to this day.

Works cited:

us of another incident of the ‘dancing plague’ outside a church in the German
town of Kölbigk. The priest of the church was unable to perform mass due to the
constant clapping, leaping, and chanting of the dancers. Due to this the priest
cursed them to dance for their failure to listen, and the dancers began to

But where did this term “Siamese twins” come from? Conjoined twin bothers Chang and Eng were born on May 11 th, 1811, in Meklong, Siam, better known as present-day Thailand. They were connected by the sternum by a short, flexible band of flesh. In the past conjoined twins were rare, most conjoined twins at the time wouldn’t survive past birth, making the pair of brothers a rare occurrence. Their mother would encourage the brothers to exercise in their youth, this led to the brothers stretching the piece of flesh connecting to two of them enough to walk side by side, swim, and even operate a boat together. In 1824 the boys were spotted by British merchant Robert Hunter, who at first thought the boys were some sort of wild creature but as he got closer, he realized what he was see was not some creature but conjoined twins. Immediately he realized he could use the boys’ unnatural looks to make a profit by exhibiting the brothers like zoo animals.

Chang and Eng would start their first tour on April 1st, 1829, aboard a trade vessel on its way to Boston, Massachusetts. Chang and Eng were popular among doctors and scientists, who would want to perform various experiments on the twins. With one doctor getting permission from Hunter to run simple experiments, it was discovered that if one felt pain the other would feel it, along with having similar habits and taste, all while having distinct personalities. They would later be experimented on by a physician named George Bolton, he noted that the band connecting he brothers, when extended wouldn’t cause pain to the brothers. During their travels, because Chang and Eng were from Siam, they would often be remarked as Siamese Twins.

Chang and Eng would soon gain their independence from Hunter and run their own tours. During his time, they would work with Phineas Barnum a showman and circus manger. After some time of touring Chang and Eng would later decide to settle down in North Carolina, where they got their citizenship, and purchase a farm in Wilkesboro, along with thirty slaves to help operate the farm with most of them being under the age of seven. After establishing their farm, Chang and Eng would meet the Yates family and consequently meet their future spouses Adelaide and Sarah Yates. They would later on go on to have 21 children in between them along with two separate houses, where they would rotate houses each three days.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">

Work cited:

Atwal, Sanj. “The dark history of the original Siamese twins, Chang and Eng Bunker.” Dec. 22 https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2022/12/the-dark-history-of-the-original-siamese-twins-chang-and-eng-bunker-730957

Bahjat, Mudhaffar. “Chang and Eng Bunker (1811–1874)”. It is commonly used to describe incidents in which a person's body is found with ashes and burned remains. It's a controversial and rare incident, and there's a lot of discussion concerning its reliability and its root causes.

Rolli developed the term in Philosophical Transactions, which was published in 1744 by the London Royal Society, the world's oldest scientific academy. Rolli described it as "a process in which a human body allegedly catches "fire”as a result of heat generated by internal chemical activity, but without evidence of an external source of ignition.” During the Victorian era, spontaneous human combustion became associated with alcoholism. Since the late 1400s, spontaneous combustion has been reported numerous times in Milan.

Although this is the case, it is important to keep in mind that SHC is a complicated and unclear concept and that many scientists and professionals have doubts about its existence. In spite of the fact that there are only a few documented cases of spontaneous human combustion worldwide, there have been numerous recorded instances over the course of history. In the 19th and 20th centuries, reports of suspected cases of SHC continued to surface, mainly in Western countries. It was common for medical journals and newspapers to report these cases.

The cases mainly involve elderly individuals, and the majority of documented cases date from the 17th to 19th centuries. The earliest reported cases of spontaneous human combustion date back to the 18th century, and most reported cases can be explained by known mechanisms of fire. However, there may have been earlier undocumented cases. Cases apparently have highly individual features. Typically, victims are elderly, overweight Caucasian women who are isolated from society and have consumed excessive amounts of alcohol.

Additionally, on the website, “Is Spontaneous Combustion Real?” It details everything about the SHC and anything else that was necessary to know. It discusses what happened during the fire and whether it was based on spontaneous human combustion (SHC) or not. Nowadays, spontaneous combustion incidents are rare, and scientific tests have not been able to provide conclusive evidence of their occurrence. Due to these circumstances, SHC has become more of a historical curiosity, a subject of debate and skepticism, than a well-established scientific fact.

Therefore, spontaneous human combustion (SHC) is an unclear phenomenon that occurs when people appear to burst into flames without any apparent external source of ignition. Several recorded incidents can most likely be attributed to traditional sources of ignition as a result of the lack of consistent evidence and confusion within the scientific and medical communities. There is currently less acknowledgement of SHC as a scientific phenomenon and more of a historical curiosity. In addition, it is necessary to conduct thorough research in order to determine the exact nature of these events.

Works Cited:

Halperin, Jonathan. The Tollund man is a mummified corpse. It was a man who lived in the 5th century BC. The Tollund man was discovered May 5,1950 in a peat bog near Tollund, Denmark. What makes this case so interesting is how well his body is preserved after all these years. His preservation was so good you could see the wrinkles in his face down to the stubble on his chin. He is one of the most famous bog bodies in the world. The purpose of the article is to educate and help people understand more about bog bodies. The circumstances of the Tollund Man's death are the subject of much speculation. Some researchers believe that he was a sacrificial victim, possibly as an offering to the gods or as a punishment for a crime. The man's last meal, which was found in his stomach, consisted of a porridge made from various seeds, suggesting that he may have eaten a ceremonial last meal before his death. For archaeologists and historians, bog bodies like as the Tollund Man present a rare chance to gain insight into the customs, beliefs, and knowledge of past societies. These remains' preservation in peat bogs offers a glimpse into life in the Iron Age and even previous eras. Researchers investigating a section of Tollund Man's colon discovered that he also had multiple parasite diseases from whipworms and mawworms, as well as the first documented case of tapeworm ever discovered in an ancient body preserved in a swamp.

Tollund Man

Links for Further Research:

Smithsonian Magazine https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/europe-bog-bodies-reveal-secrets-180962770/ The Tollund Man body appeared rubbery and deflated .

Live Science https://www.livescience.com/bog-body-tollund-man-last-meal.html the Tollund Man had several parasitic infections .

National Geographic https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/tollund-mans-last-meal The Tollund Man was discovered in North-Central Denmark.

Dr.Ms.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01028734989910515370noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1595531248189694146.post-36380811447030029812023-12-16T11:41:00.000-08:002023-12-16T11:41:58.666-08:00The Soap Lady
Author: Nyree Hardwick

Imagine you are invited to a popular older woman’s house. Say you have been looking for a job or love and she says she found you someone, but you must go quite a distance away just to meet them. Here’s the kicker, she tells you to promise her not to tell a living soul about where you’re going or what she has told you. All of a sudden… you pass out and then? You’re dead. This was how it was for the victims of “The Soap Lady”

According to many sources and records, Leonarda was both a mother and a wife to 18 children. She had become very superstitious over the years, having believed her mother cursed her and her marriage out of spite since she refused to marry the man who her parents wanted her to. She also believed this due to them not giving her marriage their blessing. After this, she had gotten arrested for fraud and her home was destroyed by one of today’s deadliest earthquakes.

Now, it wasn’t as bad at first but due to her getting pregnant 17 times, having 3 miscarriages, and losing 10 of her children from a young age. Due to this she went and spoke to a fortune teller in hopes that everything would turn up but instead was told that in her right hand they saw prison and in her left they saw an insane asylum. That didn’t drive her off the edge though, what drove her off the edge was when her eldest and favorite son came to her and told her that he was going to join the war. All her effort to protect her children was going to fail if he went to war so she did one thing in hopes to protect him. Blood sacrifices.

This was how “The Soap Lady” came to be, she went and collected three women. Managed to trick them and turned two of them into tea cakes while she turned the last one into tea cakes and soap before going on about how sweet they each were. She even went as far as to demonstrate how she did it seeing as the police had begun to assume her son, who she had been trying to protect, was the one who murdered those woman. Just like the fortune teller told her, she was arrested and sent to prison as well a insane asylum for her crimes and died there as well.

Works cited:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Serena, Katie “Serial Killer

you ever thought of a grave being locked up in a cage like a wild animal? A Mortsafe allowed this to be accomplished
very easily. Around 1816, the Mortsafe was created. These were heavy iron or iron-and-stone devices with a variety of designs. Frequently, these were
intricate, heavy iron devices consisting of rods and plates that were padlocked
together; remnants of them may be discovered near every medical school in
Scotland. Rods with heads were inserted through holes in a plate that covered the coffin. By placing a second plate over the first to create incredibly thick
protection, these rods were held in place. Two people with keys would remove
it, after covering the coffins for roughly six weeks, after the corpse had
properly decomposed, and use them again.

“A Cage for The Dead- The
Mortsafe”( video published by Phoenix History)

The question is, why were Mortsafes used in the first place? Mortsafes have only ever been used to keep the dead safe from the living. They were intended to serve as a deterrent against body snatchers, often referred to as Resurrection Men, who preyed on graveyards in the early 1800s, removing fresh corpses from their tombs and selling them to nearby anatomy schools so that they could be dissected in anatomy classes. According to an article published by Virginia Department of Historical Resources, “Before modern laws were set in place to give medical schools access to human remains, anatomy professors struggled to acquire bodies. Those of prisoners condemned to death would end up on their tables, but there were
nowhere near enough bodies to meet demand. This led to a black market in the
remains of the recently deceased.” (DHR)

The progress made in the study of anatomy and medicine is closely linked to the illicit activity of body snatching. The practice of taking bodies from cemeteries for sale…mainly to medical colleges where they were utilized for anatomy and dissection classes. According to the PBS article titled “ Body snatching around the World”, “In fact, the first known case of body snatching was committed by four medical students in Bologna in 1319. Several years earlier the famed professor at Bologna, Mundinus, had revived the study and teaching of anatomy. He conducted public dissections of bodies, usually those of condemned criminals.” (Body Snatching Around the World | History Detectives | PBS) Although, many of the bodies stolen were those of condemned criminals, some people went out of their way to make bodies available quicker.

A great example of this are the crimes that were committed by William Burke and William Hare. As said before, there was a great need for bodies in anatomy classes. According to the “Burke and Hare” article written by The University of Edinburgh, “During the 19th century, there was a chronic shortage of cadavers for anatomy classes in Edinburgh. This gave rise to a new industry in the city: grave robbing. The best-known of the 'Resurrection Men' were William Burke and William Hare, who took the grisly practice one step further. The pair murdered at least 16 people during the period 1827-1828, selling the cadavers to Dr Robert Knox's anatomy school.” (“Burke and Hare”) This continuous stealing of bodies, along with the added practice of murdering individuals to provide to medical schools; caused a very large concern to families.

Many people no longer felt safe and did everything they could to protect their loved ones. Even putting them in cages…

Works cited:

“Body Snatching

This short article published by BBC News discusses the evidence of grave robbing in West Bromwich which led to the use of Mortsafes to lower the risk of bodies being stolen. For the grave robbers who supplied the anatomy and medical schools being established in Birmingham in the late eighteenth century, West Bromwich would have been a prime target. for one of several reasons. The first reason is that it would be taken is for
the child to act as a servant to the fairies. Another reason the fairies would
take the child was so that the change could get the love from the humans like a
human child, and the last reason would be so that the fairies could get revenge
on the humans for something. Sometimes the fairies would replace the child with
an elderly fairy so that it could live out the rest of its life in the care of
the humans. People would notice their baby become ill or become not bale to
properly function and they would assume it had been “fairy struck.” The people
would say the children had been replaced by a changeling and they abandoned
them or sometimes even killed them.

There
were a few ways to identify if your child was a changeling. Irish legends say
that changelings might look sick and not grow to full size like normal humans.
Changelings also had a very large apatite and would eat a lot more food than a
normal human child.

One
theory that folklorist and historians studied was that people would substitute
their children for changelings during raids and attacks on their villages in
thoughts that they might be saving their children by doing this. Another theory
about the origin of the changeling was a lot different than the other. Some
people believe that changelings came from a very dark part of the mind from
pre-industrial Europe. If a family felt that they wouldn’t be able to care for
their child, especially if the child that had a disability or had an illness or
deformity, it was easier for them to lose their child thinking it had just been
talking by fairies, rather than believing they were just letting their child
die. Some physical characteristics that a changeling had that you might be able
to notice was they had long teeth and scraggly hair.

Changelings
would continue to appear again and again in folklore in Europe. Doctors say
this list of diseases from today’s time such as: cystic fibrosis, Down Syndrome, spina bifida, PKU,
Williams syndrome, Hunter syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, progeria, Hurler
syndrome, and Prader-Willi Syndrome, match
the description of what changelings might have been like. Now adays in the
modern world no one would really believe in changelings, but doctors say that a
lot of autistic children might have been labeled as changelings in that time.
Works cited:

Https://Static.Wikia.Nocookie.Net/Mythology/Images/2/29/Changeling2-800x0-c-Default.Jpg/Revision/Latest?Cb=20180713191804. Accessed 1 Nov. 2023.

Dimri

Meaning fake. If you thought that I would be telling you that they are real, I’m sorry to inform you that you are wrong. But there are humans who have unicorn horns. There’s a condition called the Cutaneous Horn. The cutaneous horn is a medical condition in which a person grows a horn anywhere on their body. More specifically, anywhere that is exalted to the sun. Not saying that if you are exposed to the sun, you will get a horn, but the sun does cause this condition. According to a published article by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) a cutaneous horn can also be caused by “…actinic radiation or burns.” The horn is a dense lesion made out of keratin and as the NLM puts it “…can be treated surgically, medically, or via laser ablation.” It’s a very interesting and unattractive condition. On the rarer side of the spectrum of diseases and conditions to get. It is said that the horn is common in elderly ages sixty to seventy and there are some peculiar cases on people who had the condition.

Cutaneous horn on right ear

Caption: Cutaneous Horn…Explained by a Dermatopathologist

To start off we have Madame Dimanche, otherwise known as Widow Sunday, was a French woman at the age of 76, who lived in Paris in the 19th century, who grew a cutaneous horn. It grew from her forehead at 24.9 cm (approximately 9.8 inches) in length before it was surgically removed. This case is so famous that there is even a wax figure of her in the Mütter Museum. Next, we have 101 years old Zhang Ruifang growing her cutaneous horns. Yes, horns, as in plural. One grew to be at least 2.4 inches long. And the other was just starting out. It was said that she was very happy to have her horns.

Lastly, we have a man named Wang. Wang was a Manchurian farmer who had a 13 inch horn coming out the back of his head. One day a Russian banker took a picture of Wang and sent it to a man named Robert Ripley. Ripley was a entrepreneur and at the time had a newspaper column where he talked about Wang. Ripley, most likely wanting to get an exclusive interview with this man, tried to track down Wang, spent years doing so, but never succeeded. It was almost like he never existed.

Cutaneous horns aren’t just grown on people. Rabbits have a condition where they can grow one too. It is called cottontail rabbit papillomavirus. Rabbits, specifically cottontail rabbits, have the affinity to get lesion sites that develop into cutaneous horns. Imagine seeing a rabbit with horns coming about of its face in all directions. Talk about creepy. Its honestly saddening though. To know those poor creatures have to deal with that, and that they don’t have the access nor ability to get help like humans do.

Cutaneous horns can be dangerous. They have the ability to be premalignant, benign, or malignant. So, if you ever get to the ages of sixty to seventy and get a random patch of skin on your body that discolored, please get it checked out. Because you could wake up with one day with the greatest Halloween costume of a unicorn ever seen.

Works Cited:

Cladel, Nancy M., Peng, Xuwen, Christensen, Neil, Hu, Jiafen. “The rabbit papillomavirus model: a valuable tool to study viral–host interactions.” 2019, NLM, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6501911/

Copcu, Eray, Sivrioglu, Nazan, Culhaci, Nil. “Cutaneous horns: are these lesions as innocent as they seem to be?” 2004, NLM, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC421749/#:~:text=A%20cutaneous%20horn%20(cornu%20cutaneum,benign%20or%20malignant%20epidermal%20lesions.

Cutaneous horm on right ear. survive in both aquatic and terrestrial environments, it uses a form of locomotion
called tentaculation and has the ability to express itself and communicate with
other octopus through skin color change.

The
Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus was a hoax, created on March 8, 1998, by a
person who’s created multiple other fake articles under the pseudonym of Lyle
Zapato. Zapato made up the octopus and the website to mock gullible internet
users. Many fell for the fake website, and it prompted research, studies, and other
attempts to replicate Zapato’s work. According to Hana LaRock, a journalist who
was a high school student in a computer class when the website was posted, stated
that, “The site was used to
teach young internet users the importance of “doing your research” - of
understanding that anything could be found online”. Though this
wasn’t the exact purpose behind Zapato’s website, the biggest impact of his
website was its appearance in internet literacy tests. In an NBC Connecticut
news article, in 2011, It was reported that The University of Connecticut
was recreating the hoax to see how many students would believe it without fact
checking first. They stated that, “Most people who took part in the
study, fell for it, hook, line and tentacle. In fact, not only did the students
believe that the tree octopus was real, they actually
refused to believe researchers when they told them the creature was fake.”
While Zapato aimed to belittle and mock internet users, he instead helped many
with his Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus hoax, and further encouraged internet
literacy.

Works Cited:

Beaulieu,

people are a relatively new phenomena that appear to have come about in the
early 2000s however similar stories have existed for far longer. Shadow people
are often described as shadowy humanoids who appear during sleep paralysis.
Accounts vary on the nature of these beings as some just stand there in the
corner of your vision and others act more aggressive getting up in a person’s
face. There have been some scientific explanations offered up for why people
encounter these beings but there is no definitive reason.

One
popular tale of shadow people that is seen online is The Hat Man. The Hat Man
is a shadow person who appears as a shadowy man wearing a hat. This man causes
people to be paralyzed in fear and feel breathless (https://qz.com/quartzy/1444843/what-is-sleep-paralysis). The accounts surrounding The Hat
Man almost all have a fair degree of consistency according to the The Rolling
Stone (https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/hat-man-benadryl-tiktok-monster-1234620397/). Almost all of these accounts
mention a tall man wearing a brimmed hat who appears when a person is
experiencing sleep paralysis. Another common detail in these stories is that
the person seeing The Hat Man has taken a large amount of Benadryl resulting in
them hallucinating. People online are rather split when it comes to the
existence of The Hat Man. Some think he’s just a joke that’s been spread online
and others think he’s a real shadow person intent on hurting people.

An
explanation that has been offered for why people see shadow people is that they
are hallucinating. During sleep paralysis it isn’t uncommon for people to see
things that aren’t really there. I myself have gone through sleep paralysis as
a child and can say I saw some pretty weird things that weren’t there. The most
vivid memory I have of this happening is when I was about seven maybe eight,
and I was sleeping in my mom’s bed. I was nice and sound asleep when I suddenly
opened my eyes and realized that my eyes were the only thing I could move. I
moved my eyes across the room when I suddenly saw a shadowy man that appeared
to be a doctor holding a needle that he was about to stab me with. At the time
I was terrified but looking back I most likely saw what I saw because I had a
fear of getting shots.

Works

The discovery featured a jawbone like an ape and a skull that appeared to belong to the same person. The most popular evolutionary theories of the time were supported by this assembly, which seemed to close the evolutionary gap between humans and their ape-like forebears. The Piltdown Man was considered as a key piece of evidence supporting human evolution for a number of decades. The idea of "Eoanthropus dawsoni" (Dawson's Dawn Man) gained widespread acceptance when it came up frequently in textbooks and scientific literature.

The Problem of Piltdown Man

As the years passed, doubts grew. The significance of the Piltdown Man as the missing link appeared to be called into question by other major fossil discoveries, most notably the Australopithecus and Neanderthal discovery. The inconsistencies between the skull and jawbone led scientists to begin to doubt the fossils' authenticity.1953 saw the unveiling of the truth. An extensive series of testing and investigations revealed beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Piltdown Man was a fake. The jawbone belonged to an orangutan, but the skull was in fact human. It had been falsely damaged and altered for decades to create the impression of incredible age, fooling the scientific community.

Anthropology’s Greatest Hoax

Paleoanthropologist Isabelle De Groote of Liverpool John Moores University in the United Kingdom started investigating the issue in 2009 by utilizing DNA analysis and contemporary scanning techniques on the original materials. She and her colleagues came to the conclusion that all of these parts came from an orangutan by comparing computer tomography (CT) scans of the mouth and teeth to known ape specimens. De Groote believes the forger or forgers may have obtained the orangutan from a curiosities shop, as DNA sequencing of the teeth revealed they were all from the same animal. While reviewing the CT scans, De Groote observed that almost all of the bones had an odd, off-white putty on their surface. This putty had been filled in gaps and cracks that the forger accidentally made, painted over, and stained in certain places. She discovered tiny pebbles crammed into hollow chambers and sealed with the same putty inside the crania and teeth. Given that fossilized bones are significantly heavier than more recent bones, De Groote believes the hoaxer used these pebbles to weigh down the bones.

Work Cited:

Michael, Price. “Study reveals culprit behind Piltdown Man, one of science's famous hoaxes.” Aug 9, 2016. https://www.science.org/content/article/study-reveals-culprit-behind-piltdown-man-one-science-s-most-famous-hoaxes

The editors of encyclopaedia britannica. “Piltdown Man, anthropological hoax.” Jan. 2015.https://www.britannica.com/topic/Piltdown-man

Wikipedia. “Piltdown Man.” Last edited on Oct. 3, 2023.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piltdown_Man

For Further Reference:

Dr Kenneth Oakley, Dr Joseph Weiner, and Wilfred La Gros Clark. “Piltdown Man”. Born on October 10,1905 in Springfield, Massachusetts, she came into the world with a birth defect called Seckel Syndrome that gave her peculiar features she was able to monetize later. Seckel syndrome, also known as Bird-Headed Dwarfism, is a type of dwarfism that causes bird-like features, such as a small head, small eyes, a large, beak-like nose, and a receding lower jaw (Wynbrandt). Because of this deformity, Green became a performer known as The Stork Woman in the Ringling Brothers Circus. She worked with the circus in the 1920s and 1930s. Green would wear a feather bird costume and stand at the entrance of the circus as an opening act. She was particularly placed there because she was considered less “strange” than the other performers (“Elizabeth Green Biography”).

Alongside her title as The Stork
Woman, Green was also known as Koo-Koo the Bird Girl; a name given to one other
person, Minnie Woosley, for the movie Freaks made in 1932. Although they were
both in the movie “Freaks”, and Green carried the title longer, Woosley will
always be the performer people think about when they hear the name Koo-Koo,
because she was the one hired for the role in the movie. No response was ever
given from Green about this, but after the movie was made she returned to her
position in the circus with the title of Koo-Koo (Meyer). It is said that Green
didn’t want to be a movie actress, but she was a movie fiend, and she wanted to
get the autograph of one of her favorite actors, Ronald Coleman (“Elizabeth
Green Biography”). That was why she signed the contract for the movie “Freaks.”

Green was also a very successful
businesswoman. According to IMBd she owned multiple apartment buildings in
Boston and managed them all when she was home from the circus. Her Agent once
said of her, “She may be koo-koo enough to make people laugh, but she’s not koo-koo
when it comes to signing contracts” (“Elizabeth Green Biography”).

Even though she had a disability,
she proved that she could not only sustain herself but do so incredibly well.
She turned an unfortunate circumstance into a business. She was a successful
comedienne and actress with many hobbies. Not much is known about Green’s life
after the movie or later in her career. We don’t even know much about her death,
except that she died on May 9, 2001. Much about her is left to the imagination,
but what we do know is that Elizabeth Green was able to beat the odds, and be
odd, while doing what she loved.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Works

This cryptid is known as the Boggy Creek Monster. Cryptid is defined by the Merriam-webster dictionary to be “an animal that has been claimed to exist but never proven to exist” According to the article “Fouke Monster” by Amy Thompson, sightings of this creature date back to 1946.

The Boggy Creek

Monster

The Boggy Creek Monster, also known as the Fouke Monster, is a cryptid very similar in appearance to the more well-known bigfoot. According to Jake Carter in his article “The Monster of Boggy Creek: The Real Story of the Fouke Monster,” it was described to be a hominid-shaped furry creature that was 7 to 10 feet tall with a chest 3 feet wide. It has been reported to have large red eyes and a terrible odor.

Sightings of the Boggy Creek Monster are all in the swamplands of southwest Arkansas. Its alternate name of “Fouke Monster” is derived from an encounter in 1971, where it attacked the home of Bobby Ford in the small town of Fouke. During the month of May, he said he had been out with his hunting friends when they saw the creature behind the Ford’s house. They shot at it, and claimed to have seen it fall, but as the group made their way toward the creature, they heard a woman scream. Bobby Ford immediately ran to the front door, where he was allegedly grabbed by the Fouke Monster. He was treated at a local hospital for scratches and minor shock. When his property was investigated, there was damage to the house and three-toed footprints, but not a trace of blood.

At least three movies were made with inspiration from this encounter. According to Jake Carter’s article, the first movie The Legend of Boggy Creek was made in 1973 and grossed over 22 million dollars. Many eyewitnesses played as actors in the movie. The two other movies made after this were called Return to Boggy Creek and The Barbaric Beast of Boggy Creek, Part II.

Many people have tried to explain the existence of the Boggy Creek Monster. Some have tried arguing that it is really a misidentified bigfoot, despite the footprints of the creature having only three toes versus Bigfoot’s five-toed tracks. Others have claimed that sightings of the cryptid are just misidentified black bears. The Boggy Creek Monster has captivated public attention since attacking the Ford’s home in 1971, with sightings dating back much further. Movies have been made focusing on the cryptid, sharing its existence across the country. Many have attempted to debunk the creature’s existence as a misidentified black bear or bigfoot, but the Fouke Monster continued to keep its identity.

Works Cited:

Carter, Jake. “The Monster of Boggy Creek: The Real Story of the Fouke Monster.” anomalien. 29 Aug. 2020. https://anomalien.com/the-monster-of-boggy-creek-the-real-story-of-the-fouke-monster/. His main health problems were “alcoholism and pituitary gigantism”, according to Laken Brooks of Forbes. He had a brain tumor that impacted his pituitary gland, which in turn, caused excessive growth from a condition called acromegaly. Since he was so tall, he made a living performing freak shows in the United Kingdom. He became a celebrity and entertainer because of his height, and lead to many researchers and doctors to pressure Byrne in donating his corpse for further analysis. Keep in mind Byrne lived during the late 18th, when many doctors and surgeons had little understanding of this excessive growth of a person. According to Allison Meier from JSTOR Daily, “an article from around the time of his death declared that “the whole tribe of surgeons put in a claim for the poor departed Irish giant and surrounded his house just as Greenland harpooners would an enormous whale.” Even though Byrne was pressured to donate, he wanted otherwise. As he was dying, he said he wanted to be buried at sea, as this would be a sure way to protect his remains. However, despite his efforts, it did not come true.

His remains were Stolen by anatomist John Hunter, who bribed someone to replace Byrne’s remains in his coffin. According to Allison Meier from the JSTOR Daily, John apparently “boiled flesh from bone” and stored his skeleton for four years. Hunter eventually turned the bones over to the Royal College of Surgeon’s Hunterian Museum, where they have displayed Byrne’s remains for over 200 years. As time went on, many critics objected this because it disrespected the Irish Giant’s wishes to not have his remains displayed. In the end, the trustees of the museum decided that it was best to take down the remains but keep them in private for further research. At the end of the day, while Charles O’Brien may had been extraordinarily tall, he was still a human, and we must protect his wishes.

Works Cited:

Aitken, Peter. “British museum will remove the bones of ‘Irish Giant’ Charles Byrne.” New York Post, 18 Jan. 2023, https://nypost.com/2023/01/18/british-museum-will-remove-the-bones-of-irish-giant-charles-byrne/ Accessed 23 Oct. 2023.

Brooks, Laken. “’Irish Giant’ Never Wanted His Body To Be A Specimen. It also has a playful nature. He has a violent personality and gets angry when not fed properly. He occasionally sings to kids. Despite being generally regarded as genuine, it's stated that upsetting a kobold can be a dangerous mistake. A kobold can appear as a human, a fire, a candle, or any non-human animal, even though they are normally invisible. The most popular images of kobolds are of them being small humanoid creatures.

There are three different types of Kobolds: household helpers, underground and mining Kobolds, and ships and water Kobolds. The household kobold is a mischievous household spirit that usually helps with chores and other useful duties, but he also frequently pushes over people who are crouched or hides crops and domestic goods (Household spirits). Legends frequently depict underground kobolds as evil beings. People begged for protection from them in the medieval mining towns. They were held accountable for the disasters, cave-ins, and rock falls that troubled the human miners. Fooling miners into taking worthless minerals was a popular kobold trick. In the 16th century, for instance, miners may have come upon what appeared to be rich veins of silver or copper, but upon melting them, they would often find that the metal was dangerous or harmful. Those handling these ores experienced a scorching sensation. By making gifts of gold and silver and demanding that their fellow miners treat the kobolds with respect, miners attempted to win over the creatures. But according to some legends, kobolds only gave more deadly ores in return for their kindness. Kobold - Wikipedia) Title: Mine Spirit. Sea kobolds would reside on board and look after the crew and ship. While no one was looking, they would manage the cargo as well as pump water out of the hold, patch any holes, rescue those who had fallen overboard, and plug any leaks. It was also thought that the Kobolds' strength prevented ships from sinking in emergencies, thus if you ever saw them, your ship was bound to perish. Based on some stories, captains left out their best foods and wines for the Kobolds to enjoy, while in other accounts, crew members threw their captains overboard for denying their existence. (Kobold - Wikipedia) Title: Water spirits.

In German legend, kobolds are still valued as house spirits and protectors. Kobolds can be found in a lot of video games and television shows, including Dark Age of Camelot, Warcraft, The Record of Lodoss War, One-Piece, and Dungeons & Dragons. You are able to attract them to your home on Midsummer Eve, and they appreciate gifts, as opposed to most other house spirits. Clothing is their favorite item since it prevents kobolds from feeling mistreated or unappreciated.

Work cited:

Chris. “Kobolds: The Mischievous Goblin Creatures of Folklore”.
Jean
was driving her father's truck that had no anti-brake locks, which
caused it to be a very dangerous vehicle to drive on icy, slick roads.
The truck ended up skidding on an ice patch and Jean ended up in a
roadside ditch. Jean recalled that she went to look for help, walking in
cowboy boots. She remembered getting frustrated thinking her friend
Wally’s place was much closer than it was. When she finally saw lights,
shining from Wally’s, everything around her went black – which was the
last thing Jean could remember. When Wally and his wife got Jean to the
hospital, Doctors were not optimistic about bringing her back since her
skin was so frozen that no needle could prick her skin, they just broke
from contact.

But
a medical miracle was formed hours later, when Jean awoke, talking
about how she was worried about her father being upset about his wrecked
truck. Many thought this miracle was due to the prayers that were being
said, but science determines that our bodies can go through a state of
hibernation. Since Jean was frozen solid, her blood slowed, and her need
for oxygen was less causing her organs to remain safe and unharmed.
Unlike most people that would’ve reacted to a second chance with a sense
of gratefulness, Jean kept waiting for something big to happen. She
says that it was as if she just went to sleep and woke up in the
hospital which to her was uninteresting.

“Frozen ordeal has happy ending” Thirteen towns newspaper, Fosston

Accessed 25, Oct. 2023. This article by the department of public health
of Connecticut talks about both hypothermia and frostbite. It lists the
differences between the two and gives people an understanding of what
to look for in case you feel like you might be experiencing one of the
two. For frostbite people complain of loss of feeling and color in the
affected area which is commonly fingers, cheeks, noses, and ears.
Compared to hypothermia it is less serious since with hypothermia your
body is losing more heat than it can produce.

core temperatures drop, frostbite danger, and how our bodies have a
built-in cold protection. One of the more interesting facts is the cold
protection is named Vasoconstriction, it limits the amount of heat you
lose to the environment. Another mechanism is how our bodies heat up is
shivering, it produces heat and allows our temperatures to rise.

They found a frozen corpse sticking out of the snow. They believed that they had come across a hiker who had just recently passed and quickly alerted the proper authorities. The body was retrieved as well as the things that were found with it like tools and weapons such as stone arrowheads, knives, and a copper axe. Archeologists were brought in to look at the body and they dated the body to be at least 4,000 years old. They named the body Otzi because he was found in the Otzal Alps. Researchers began to try to find out the cause of death. When Otzi was first found, archeologists believed that Otzi was free of diseases but in 2007 researchers discovered that Otzi had been infested with whipworm and that he had suffered from arthritis. However, neither of those conditions contributed to his death.

Otzi the Iceman

They believed Otzi was about 5’2, weighed about 110 lbs, had died between 40-50 years old, and that he had lived through the copper age. Many theories of Otzi’s death floated around for some time, theories like Otzi had gotten caught in a horrible snowstorm and had frozen to death but a new discovery had come to light. Researchers had discovered that Otzi had a flint arrowhead lodged in his left shoulder and a deep cut was also found on his hand which is thought to be a defensive wound. With this evidence, scientists began to make sense of Otzi’s last days. Otzi had been shot by an arrow from behind and suffered extensive blood loss and died soon after. His body, clothes, and belongings were found undisturbed.

Otzi’s place of death with Albert Zink

A new study on the Iceman had begun. Scientists extracted DNA from Otzi’s pelvis and conducted an analysis of his genetic makeup. The analysis revealed that Otzi had dark skin, dark eyes, and was likely bald. Albert Zink, the head of the Institute for Mummy Studies at Eurac Research says, “It’s not surprising that Otzi was dark skinned.” He even adds that it’s believed that a lot of Europeans during that time likely had darker skin compared to present-day Europeans. A recent analysis of Otzi’s genome was done and they found that he has more than 92% Anatolian ancestry. This contradicted what was concluded in the original genome analysis. Researchers today still look for clues and evidence to continue to piece together Otzi’s life and his last days.

Works Cited:

Historic Mysteries. “Otzi the Iceman: 5000+ year old murder case.” YouTube, 9 Apr. 2022. https://youtu.be/mRa0Gi_mRjs?si=E5JOpY2ZLtr-L98y .YouTube. Acting as which they are normal people. People called anything that looked out of place, a monster. So, it would not be completely shocking to mistake a scientific accident for a monster. A common illness that was seen as an act of a vampire was tuberculosis, which mostly ended in death during the 19th century. The most common symptom was that it made you slowly lose weight, which could be related to what happens when your blood gets ‘sucks’ out of your body. Which most people think vampires cause on their victims.

A person who fell to the illness of tuberculous during the 1880s.

One of the first actions of the belief of the vampires is the Mercy Brown case. It started with the Brown family, George and Mary Brown, moving to this new town, Exeter, Rhode Island. The village thought the family was normal and did not think anything about it. Till the day Mary Brown, Mercy’s mother, fell ill with tuberculosis during the 1800s. It caused her to die, then her eldest daughter happened to have the same fate. Then the action happened again with her son, but he happened to pull the lucky stick and survived the illness. Finally, Mercy fell ill and had the same future as her sister and mother. The sudden rounds of death felt odd to the villagers, and they started to be a little more interested into the family’s personal business.

Mercy Brown’s grave as of modern day sights.

Mercy’s mother and sister were soon buried after their deaths, but Mercy was not due to the extreme coldness. So, the village decided to live Mercys body out and wait out till it became warmer. When the village turned their attention back to burying Mercy, they noticed something odd about her body. When the villagers opened her casket and saw she was in ‘perfect’ condition, no sights of decay and maybe even some growth within her hair as well as her fingernails. She was believed to still be alive due to the fact that she has change in a positive way and looked even better than when she died. The nearly 8 foot creature is said to have been first sighted in 1908. The Boggy Creek Monster is a hairy beast who crept around the small town of Fouke. There had been sightings here and there until early 1970 when an attack was reported.

During May of 1971 Bobby Ford, a twenty five year old man, reported that he was attacked in his home near U.S. Highway 71. He reported the creature's appearance and how he though it was a bear at first however when it ran upright he knew it could not be a bear, the eyes on this creature were red, and it had very heavy fur. . He detailed how he just barely managed to get away before getting treatment at the hospital. After the story got out about the attack more sightings started to be reported.

From the 1970s till now the Boggy Creek Monster has gained more and more popularity. Even in the town of Fouke, Arkansas where the sightings and attack happened has embraced the cryptid and built a “monster mart” that carries Boggy Creek Monster memorabilia. Also there has been about five different movies made about this monster. Also on FoukeMonster.net there is a sightings log that was active up until 2021.

Works Cited:

Jackson, Nicholas. “Boggy Creek Monster.” Atlas Obscura. 20 Oct 2022. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/boggy-creek-monster.

Powell, Jim.” The Fouke Monster: A look at how the media recorded the reports of the 1971 alleged sighting of a large creature in rural Miller County,Ark.” 20 Oct 2022. https://web.archive.org/web/20030803214623/http://texarkanagazette.com/articles/2001/06/24/export15694.txt.

Links for further research:

1.Fouke Monster http://www.foukemonster.net/. Or Urban Legends?
Author: Anonymous

Around the world there seem to be these types of hills that you can drive down to the bottom, put your car in neutral, and then your car will slowly seem to move backwards. As Elizabeth Borne said on (“What are Gravity Hills?”) “A gravity hill is a place where gravity seems to be working against itself; where gravity seems to temporarily not work as it should”

There are reported dozens of gravity hills around the world including in the US, UK, Australia, Brazil, Ireland, and Italy (“These Gravity Defying Hills Are One of The Strangest Natural Phenomena We’ve Seen.”) Gravity Hills are optical illusions. These hills are optical illusions, the illusion is that there is no horizon to been seen due the landscape. This illusion confuses the brain to make us think that the slope is going a different way than it is (“These Gravity Defying Hills Are One of The Strangest Natural Phenomena We’ve Seen.”)

Some people believe that these hills could work because of the urban legend that surround them. One of these hills in Lake Wales, Florida there is an urban legend of a huge alligator was harassing a native tribe. The tribe sent out their great warrior chief to kill the alligator. Following the chief’s death in battle, he was buried on the north side of the hill. Years later pioneers noticed while they were hauling goods for the army trail, they noticed the horses strained at the foot of the hill, even though it appeared to be going downhill. (“The Legend of Spook Hill”)

Another legend that is said about these gravity hills is, a hill located in Arcadia, Michigan. The legend says that it is an old church “pulling sinners in” to explain the way the cars are being pulled uphill towards the buildings. (“Gravity Hills: Spooky Optical Illusions of Roads”)

There is another legend of these gravity hills. This one is located in Altadena, CA, the legend says that many years ago a bus broke down trying to go up the hill, the bus driver was seeing what was wrong with the bus and the kids inside got bored. The kids started exiting the bus, the started playing outside not realizing what was coming next. The bus driver was distracted, and a car comes speeding up the hill, the car goes through the crowd of children, killing the majority of them on impact. Legend says that the kids bunch together and push cars up the hill because they think they are scary. (“The Ghostly Tragedy of the Altadena Gravity Hill”)

Gravity hills are an optical illusion. That makes people wonder “did I really just go up a hill backwards?”. Either using ghost stories or the way there is no horizon this make you wonder, Ghost Story? Or Optical Illusion?”

Works Cited:

Borneman, Elizabeth. “What are Gravity Hills?” Geography Realm, 12 March 2016. https://www.geographyrealm.com/what-are-gravity-hills/

Bec, Crew. “These Gravity Defying Hills Are One of The Strangest Natural Phenomena We’ve Seen.” Science Alert, 6 March 2017. https://www.sciencealert.com/gravity-hills-physics-defying-optical-illusion-car-drifts-uphill

Palo, Peyten. “The Legend of Spook Hill” Visit Central Florida, Accessed 25 October 2022. https://visitcentralflorida.org/blog/the-legend-of-spook-hill/

Smith, Lauren. “Gravity Hills: A Spooky Optical Illusion of the Roads” Jerry, 27 April 2022. https://getjerry.com/insights/gravity-hills-optical-illusion

“The Ghostly Tragedy of the Altadena Gravity Hill” Backpackerverse, Accessed 25 October 2022. https://backpackerverse.com/altadena-gravity-hill/

Links for Further Research:

<span aria-owns="pdfjs_internal_id_20R" dir="ltr" style="left: 242.483px;
