The Beast of Gevaudan

Darrell Craig

The Beast of Gevaudan was one the first serial killers recorded in the world’s history. This animal, or demon as some may recognize, was double the size of a normal wolf and had many ways that were different from the way it lived and hunted. This beast terrorized the south-central mountains of France for years before they “killed” it. The story goes back to the first recorded sighting in 1764. There were many distinct features on the beast which included: sharp long teeth, coarse black hair, and a very massive body. This animal was the perfect killing machine, its body was perfectly made to survive in the mountains of France which is also a factor of why it took so long for them to “kill” the beast. Many victims had their lives taken by this beast and only some were lucky enough to live another day after the encounter with the beast.

There were many ways the citizens of France could tell if the beast of Gevaudan had struck or not. The beast usually only attacked women and children. Their bodies would be found sometimes unclothed, or with their throats ripped out, and in many of the cases their bodies would drained of blood. This caused many of the people to say “werewolf” or even “demon”. The beast had taken over 200 lives while it made its way through France. Many of the people became outraged by the animal and started to go out and hunt the beast. They would begin to cover the land in small groups. Then soon as time passed the searches became large parties of men, and soon after that a whole army of men began to search for the beast. The beast even got the attention of King Louis XV who sent much of his army to find and kill the beast. The search went on for a while and many rewards were offered for the capture of the beast. During the search for the beast, there were hundreds of wolves were massacred. The population of the wolves were troubled in that area after this. The reason of the killing of the wolves was thought that they could have also been apart of the murders as well and not just the beast alone. In 1767, the beast disappeared around the middle of that year. Many say that the vast amount of poisoned carcasses are what drove the beast out the area. There were no more reports or sighting of the animal after that year.

Many people today struggle, including myself, to grasp if this creature actually existed or not. This could’ve easily been a rather large wolf that people could’ve mistaken as a werewolf simply because of its size in general. The blood being drained from their bodies was another factor of the werewolf conspiracy. The only facts that are truly held firm are that people were dying in large numbers and in a span of three years without any explanation. The victims were obviously attacked and killed viciously with evidence of it being an animal. Many will never know if the beast did really exist or if this was simply an overgrown wolf. All we know for sure is the murders stopped in 1767 and did not continue.

Beast of Bray Road

Brooke Solomon

Cryptozoology is the search and study for animals whose existence is little to none. There are many animals like Honey Island Swamp Monster, Bigfoot, Yeti, Loch Ness monster, Bray Road Beast and many others. All of these creatures have never truly been discovered but people have claimed to have seen sightings of them. Although there is no real proof of any of these creatures but people continue to believe they have seen them.
The Beast of Bray Road is a creature that has been known to be seen near the towns of Delavan and Elkhorn in Wisconsin. The beast has many labels to the type of creature it is. Many think it is a werewolf, some think it may be Bigfoot. The reason this creature got the name Bray Road Beast s because the first sighting of this creature happened on Bray Road in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. The creature is said to be about 5-7 feet tall on its hind legs. It is estimated to be about 400-700 pounds. People have said to see it eating road kill with it in its two front paws.

The first sighting to ever go public was on October 31, 1991. A woman named Dorostine Gipson was on her way home one dark evening when she felt as if her car's right front tire was lifted off the ground.  She got out of her car and looked into the darkness. She seen some Creature Running at her very fast. She could not make out exactly what this creature was but she said it was “very bulky and that it was compared to someone who lifted weights a lot.”  She also claimed to hear the sounds of its “heavy feet”. She quickly ran back into her car and started to drive away when the beast jumped on the back of her car. Thankfully the car was slippery from being wet that the creature had fallen off. She showed her neighbor the scratches on her car the next day. Word started to spread and many more people came up and talked about their encounters dating all the way back to 1989.
There have been many sightings of the beast through the years. Most sightings end with the beast fleeing back into the forest. This creature has also been claimed to be the Michigan Dogman. Some claim that they have a lot of similar traits but they are located in 2 different locations. No one truly knows if these creatures are the same. They may be and they may not be.

Do you believe that this creature is real? Do you believe what people are saying or do you need to see it for yourself? There is no real proof that this creature is real only the sightings that have been reported.  It is a big mystery that is yet to be solved. Maybe one day it will be but until then it will be known as an urban legend.

The Beast of Bray Road

Author: Paige Fulmer

The Beast of Bray road is said to be a hairy humanoid with canine features, much like a Werewolf.  Although in some places it was labeled as Bigfoot.  Scientist labeled it as Bigfoot because they wanted to avoid dealing with absurdities that people would be frightened by it more than calling it a werewolf.  The Beast of Bray Road  is the most famous modern American werewolf.  The Beast is out of the ordinary but nothing like an actual werewolf.  The Beast is sort of that of two different creatures in the same place at the same time but only seeing one.

The Beast of Gévaudan

During the 1760’s sightings of a wolf like monster became the most feared killing creature in Gévaudan, France. In the online article, The Cryptid Zoo: Beast of Gévaudan author Jamie Hall, writes about some of them.  According to Hall, the creature known as, “La Bèstia de Gévaudan”, and it terrorized the former province of Gévaudan France.  The beast first recorded attack was during the summer of 1764. A young woman was tending to her cattle near a city called Langogne in the eastern part of Gévaudan, when she saw the beast coming towards her. However the bulls in the herd charged the beast away. The next first official victim of the beast was 40-year-old Emmet Mardén who was killed near the town of Langogne. (Hall, Werewolves)

After both encounters according to Jamie Hall, eyewitnesses were able to describe the wolf-like animal. Witnesses said that the beast was quadruped the size of a horse reminding them of a bear, hyena, and wolf all at the same time. It has a long wolf-like nose, and a mouth so large that you can see all of its teeth. Its neck is long and strong, the tail resembled a panther and its’ so strong that the beast uses it as a weapon. The beast’s feet are like cloven hooves. Some people believe that the beast was a werewolf, or even a shape-shifter. The beast's fur was the color red and its back had a streak of black. It also had a terrible smell. (Hall, Werewolves).

From July 1764, to June 1767, wolves terrorized the regions of Gévaudan France attacking 210 people, which 113 were killed. During October of 1764 two hunters reported spotting the beast and shooting it from a distance. The wolf fell to the ground then immediately rose to its feet, they then fired a second shot into the creature and again it fell to the ground again. This time the creature rose slowly but managed to get away. As it escaped the hunters fired two more shots into the beast and each time the beast would fall to the ground only to rise again. The hunters saw the blood trail and were sure that the beast was dead.  Instead of finding the body of the beast, they found the body of several more victims. (C. H. D. Clarke, Hunting)

The people of Gévaudan were tired of living in fear and joined together in a hunt to kill the beast which consisted of several royal huntsmen, nobles, and civilians. This action was taken by the King of France, Louis XV. The King hired Jaques Portefaix and eight other people to kill the beast. They killed all the wolves they could find, but the attacks continued, and wolf hunters were replaced by other professionals. The last beast on record was killed by Jean Chastel, on June 19, 1767. Chastel killed the beast with a silver bullet, took the corpus and displayed it for everyone to see. - Since then Gévaudan has not seen or been attacked by any wolf like creatures. (Waite, Killings)
The question everyone is asking now is if the beast is still at large, or is it hiding, waiting to come back and take over Gévaudan, France? I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Beast of Bray Road

Author: Hannah Taylor

Wisconsin’s main Manwolf sightings. (“Map A, Creature Sightings.”)

Since the 1930’s, in Southern Wisconsin, sightings of animals, half-man and half-beast, have been reported to local authorities. In her book, Werewolves: Mysteries, Legends, and Unexplained Phenomena, author Linda Godfrey, writes about some of them.  According to Godfrey, the creature known as, the “Beast of Bray Road”, lives in her neighborhood.  In 1991, Doris Gipson, a teenager from Elkhorn, Wisconsin reported seeing it on her trip into town Halloween night.  She felt a bump while driving, and thinking she had run over a cat or dog, got out of her car to investigate. When Doris approached the rear of her car, she saw a wolf-like creature coming towards her. She quickly jumped back into her car and proceeded to get away, “But the creature made a leap for her car and left raking scratch marks on the rear of it” (Godfrey, Werewolves 41).
It was after this encounter in 1991 that Linda Godfrey, working as a reporter at the time for a Walworth County newspaper, first heard about this sighting, along with information about a folder filled with similar stories filed away at the Walworth County Animal Control Office.  After locating this folder and compiling a description of what people reported seeing, she reached the consensus that the beast was, “... about six feet tall, covered with wild-looking dark brown fur, with the head of a German shepherd and glaring yellow eyes that seem to challenge the observer” (Godfrey, Werewolves 42).  Kneeling Roadkill is Godfrey’s illustration of the beast, which she drew for her article, Tracking down the ‘Beast of Bray Road’.  It was first published in the December 29, 1991 edition of, The Week, a local newspaper and again republished in 2006.

In 2009, Wisconsin’s NBC News, channel 15, did a report entitled, Special Assignment: Wisconsin Werewolf.  According to their correspondent Chris Papst,

November 2006: Holy Hill Road in Washington County: Steve Krueger, a DNR worker, is on his daily routes picking up deer carcasses. He parks his truck and throws a small doe in the bed. When he climbs back into the cab to fill out the paperwork, his trucks starts to shake.
Added Krueger, "At first I didn't think anything of it and it shook a little bit more vigorously a second time. I just glanced up into the rearview mirror of my truck and I saw this big, hairy, black I don't know what it was."
Steve threw it in drive and slammed on the gas.
"It was big, it was stocky," recalled Krueger. "It had big pointed ears on the top of its head, and a bigger snout than what a bear has. I guesstimated it was between six and seven feet tall."
Steve filed a report of an aggressive animal to the sheriff's department. It didn't take long for the media to pick up on it. (Papst)
By 2011, the associated press and other news outlets had picked up on these stories of strange creature sightings in the Wisconsin, Michigan area. Sean Hannity, from Fox News’ Sean Hannity Show, decided to feature the local legend, “Beast of Bray Road”, in one of his annual, month long segments dealing with conspiracy theories.  He included live interviews with author Linda Godfrey, DNR witness Stephen Kruger, and another witness, Katie Zahn.  Hannity also discussed a theory floating around that links the “Beast of Bray Road” to the Native American effigy mounds that are located in the area.  Many locals feel that the Spirit of the Mounds  might be connected to this phenomenon.  Could this half man, half beast be a spirit manifestation from one of them (Beast)?

It has been twenty-one years since Linda Godfrey first published her original newspaper report. Since then, there have been more sightings and more published information on this creature. Has the mystery revolving around the Bray Road Beast been resolved? No, there are still believers and doubters out there. When asked if she thinks the sightings are over, Godfrey replied “similar creatures are reported to me regularly from all over the US, the Beast is still spotted on Bray Road. The most recent credible report was from a middle-age couple who saw it cross the road near Hwy NN and then easily hop a fence, all on two legs. They said its shaggy fur “flowed” in the wind” (Godfrey, “20 Years”).
So, for those of you who are interested in following this creature, it has its own website, THE BEAST OF BRAY ROAD; HUNTING THE AMERICAN WEREWOLF http://www.beastofbrayroad.com/mainlair.html .The Main Lair page contains links for future sightings along with other interesting links.
