The Bray Road Beast

 Bray Road in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, is described to be a very peaceful, beautiful, quiet area. It’s mainly just woods on this road, but theses woods is the home of the Beast of Bray Road. This beast is described as a cryptid which is an animal that cryptozoologist believe is real but has not been discovered yet.

This beast has been called hairy humanoid, shapeshifter, bigfoot and also a werewolf. The Bray Road Beast has been spotted in Wisconsin number of times. The first encounter of the Bray Road Beast was in1936. Although it has been label as a werewolf, no one has actual seen it transform. The first report of the beast was in 1991 by a lady named Doristine Gipson.  Doristine was driving down the Bray Road and while she was changing her radio station felt a bump up under her car. She got out and checked the rear of the car to see if she had hit anything, but she did not see anything. Doristine then checked her surrounds, but she did not see anything. As she started towards the woods, she saw something hairy charge towards her. Doristine ran back to her car and as she was driving away the creature jumped on the trunk of her car but it fell off. The next day, Halloween night, she returned back to Bray Road with a little girl that she had been taking trick-or-treating. She told the little girl to stay in one spot while she went to the She seen the creature again and drove away. 

Is it Human?

Doristine was not the only one to see the beast. Lori Enddrizzi and Tom seen the beast after Doristine. Lori had informed her mother that she thought she had seen a werewolf and her mother believed her. She explained to her mother that her first impression of the beast was a human from the beast backside. Once Lori past the animal, she slowed down to look at the beast in her rear mirror. She said that the beast was holding its food like how a human would. 

Although this creature was spotted on Bray Road, Tom claimed that he seen it two times on Route 106,which is still in Wisconsin. He also said the lit left a scratch on his car. There are many more reports and new articles about the beast. No one knows exactly if it’s a human, a wolf or a werewolf. It’s up to you whether you believe or not.

Beast of Bray Road

Cryptozoology is the search and study for animals whose existence is little to none. There are many animals like Honey Island Swamp Monster, Bigfoot, Yeti, Loch Ness monster, Bray Road Beast and many others. All of these creatures have never truly been discovered but people have claimed to have seen sightings of them. Although there is no real proof of any of these creatures but people continue to believe they have seen them.
The Beast of Bray Road is a creature that has been known to be seen near the towns of Delavan and Elkhorn in Wisconsin. The beast has many labels to the type of creature it is. Many think it is a werewolf, some think it may be Bigfoot. The reason this creature got the name Bray Road Beast s because the first sighting of this creature happened on Bray Road in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. The creature is said to be about 5-7 feet tall on its hind legs. It is estimated to be about 400-700 pounds. People have said to see it eating road kill with it in its two front paws.

The first sighting to ever go public was on October 31, 1991. A woman named Dorostine Gipson was on her way home one dark evening when she felt as if her car's right front tire was lifted off the ground.  She got out of her car and looked into the darkness. She seen some Creature Running at her very fast. She could not make out exactly what this creature was but she said it was “very bulky and that it was compared to someone who lifted weights a lot.”  She also claimed to hear the sounds of its “heavy feet”. She quickly ran back into her car and started to drive away when the beast jumped on the back of her car. Thankfully the car was slippery from being wet that the creature had fallen off. She showed her neighbor the scratches on her car the next day. Word started to spread and many more people came up and talked about their encounters dating all the way back to 1989.
There have been many sightings of the beast through the years. Most sightings end with the beast fleeing back into the forest. This creature has also been claimed to be the Michigan Dogman. Some claim that they have a lot of similar traits but they are located in 2 different locations. No one truly knows if these creatures are the same. They may be and they may not be.
 

 

Do you believe that this creature is real? Do you believe what people are saying or do you need to see it for yourself? There is no real proof that this creature is real only the sightings that have been reported.  It is a big mystery that is yet to be solved. Maybe one day it will be but until then it will be known as an urban legend.

Wisconsin’s main Manwolf sightings. (“Map A, Creature Sightings.”)

Since the 1930’s, in Southern Wisconsin, sightings of animals, half-man and half-beast, have been reported to local authorities. In her book, Werewolves: Mysteries, Legends, and Unexplained Phenomena, author Linda Godfrey, writes about some of them.  According to Godfrey, the creature known as, the “Beast of Bray Road”, lives in her neighborhood.  In 1991, Doris Gipson, a teenager from Elkhorn, Wisconsin reported seeing it on her trip into town Halloween night.  She felt a bump while driving, and thinking she had run over a cat or dog, got out of her car to investigate. When Doris approached the rear of her car, she saw a wolf-like creature coming towards her. She quickly jumped back into her car and proceeded to get away, “But the creature made a leap for her car and left raking scratch marks on the rear of it” (Godfrey, Werewolves 41).

It was after this encounter in 1991 that Linda Godfrey, working as a reporter at the time for a Walworth County newspaper, first heard about this sighting, along with information about a folder filled with similar stories filed away at the Walworth County Animal Control Office.  After locating this folder and compiling a description of what people reported seeing, she reached the consensus that the beast was, “... about six feet tall, covered with wild-looking dark brown fur, with the head of a German shepherd and glaring yellow eyes that seem to challenge the observer” (Godfrey, Werewolves 42).  Kneeling Roadkill is Godfrey’s illustration of the beast, which she drew for her article, Tracking down the ‘Beast of Bray Road’.  It was first published in the December 29, 1991 edition of, The Week, a local newspaper and again republished in 2006.

In 2009, Wisconsin’s NBC News, channel 15, did a report entitled, Special Assignment: Wisconsin Werewolf.  According to their correspondent Chris Papst,

November 2006: Holy Hill Road in Washington County: Steve Krueger, a DNR worker, is on his daily routes picking up deer carcasses. He parks his truck and throws a small doe in the bed. When he climbs back into the cab to fill out the paperwork, his trucks starts to shake.

Added Krueger, "At first I didn't think anything of it and it shook a little bit more vigorously a second time. I just glanced up into the rearview mirror of my truck and I saw this big, hairy, black I don't know what it was."

Steve threw it in drive and slammed on the gas.

"It was big, it was stocky," recalled Krueger. "It had big pointed ears on the top of its head, and a bigger snout than what a bear has. I guesstimated it was between six and seven feet tall."

Steve filed a report of an aggressive animal to the sheriff's department. It didn't take long for the media to pick up on it. (Papst)

By 2011, the associated press and other news outlets had picked up on these stories of strange creature sightings in the Wisconsin, Michigan area. Sean Hannity, from Fox News’ Sean Hannity Show, decided to feature the local legend, “Beast of Bray Road”, in one of his annual, month long segments dealing with conspiracy theories.  He included live interviews with author Linda Godfrey, DNR witness Stephen Kruger, and another witness, Katie Zahn.  Hannity also discussed a theory floating around that links the “Beast of Bray Road” to the Native American effigy mounds that are located in the area.  Many locals feel that the Spirit of the Mounds  might be connected to this phenomenon.  Could this half man, half beast be a spirit manifestation from one of them (Beast)?

It has been twenty-one years since Linda Godfrey first published her original newspaper report. Since then, there have been more sightings and more published information on this creature. Has the mystery revolving around the Bray Road Beast been resolved? No, there are still believers and doubters out there. When asked if she thinks the sightings are over, Godfrey replied “similar creatures are reported to me regularly from all over the US, the Beast is still spotted on Bray Road. The most recent credible report was from a middle-age couple who saw it cross the road near Hwy NN and then easily hop a fence, all on two legs. They said its shaggy fur “flowed” in the wind” (Godfrey, “20 Years”).
