The Most Haunted Forest

 Author: L.K. Leaphart

The Hoia-Baciu Forest is in the heart of Transylvania. The Forest spans for 792 acres and is deemed the most haunted forest in the world. The Hoia-Baciu Forest has many legends and unsolved mysteries dating back to Neolithic times. Many people visit the Hoia-Baciu Forest in hopes of gaining answers of the mysterious legends and experiences.

The legends of the Hoia-Baciu Forest started to become popular after a little girl went missing. She was five years old when she went missing. A search party was organized but she was never found. Until five years later, she reappeared. She was wearing the same clothes when she went missing. The little girl had not aged and had absolutely no recollection of what happened. She was untouched. Another legend is the disappearance of a Sheppard and his 200 sheep. The remains have yet to be found after all these years. People have also reported UFO sightings frequently in the 1970s. This happened more after a military technician was able to capture a photo of a UFO.

The Hoia-Baciu Forest is very popular for the strange vegetation. The trees assume unnatural positions like being bent and curved. In the middle of the Forest is Poiana Rotunda. Poiana Rotunda is a huge circle in the middle of the forest where nothing grows. Scientist have studied the soil and have not found any evidence as to why nothing grows. The locals refuse to go to this area of the forest because it is where the most paranormal and strange activity happens in the forest.

Many people who’ve entered the forest never leave the same. The Hoia-Baciu Forest is known for inducing anxiety and making visitors of the forest feel as if they are being watched. People also leave the forest feeling unwell. It has also been documented that people will develop random rashes, bruises, and scratches after leaving the Hoia-Baciu Forest. People are also more prone to lose track of time. Many people have left also with very little memories from the Hoia-Baciu Forest due to forgetting after leaving the Forest

The Hoia-Baciu Forest remains a mystery to this day. The Forest remains a tourist attraction today and is visited by many excluding the locals of Romania. Is it possible for the mystery to be solved in the Bermuda Triangle of Romania?

UFO Welcome Center (SC)

 Author: Doug

In Bowman, South Carolina there is a tourist attraction called the UFO Welcome Center. It was a place created by a man name Jody Pendarvis. Pendarvis built it in 1994. UFO Welcome Center is made of wood, fiberglass and plastic. Some people may think he is crazy for the fact that he built it on his suspicions that aliens are real. He made the UFO Welcome Center in hopes that if the aliens comes that they will take him with them.

Sightings of UFOs all over the world help the UFO Welcome Center get visitors. The people that see UFOs have a place to go to find information. Because of sightings there are lots of people that believe that aliens and UFOs are real. The UFO Welcome Center is exactly like what Jody Pendarvis thinks a UFO would look like from the inside to the outside. Even how cold he thinks it get form the inside. He Pendarvis keeps a lot of old junk like old TVs and computers to attract more people to come there.

The UFO Welcome Center also help people understand more about UFOs and Aliens. Pendarvis said that this is just a hobby that he loves, and he talks about how much money he spends on his hobby. The amount he spends twenty-two thousand dollars. The UFO Welcome Center isn’t talked about much since its in the small state of South Carolina, so most people don’t know about it or have never even heard of it. But the people that have heard of it have done research and know about aliens and UFOs.

There is a National UFO website and South Carolina is a hotspot for UFO sightings, so it makes sense to why the UFO Welcome Center is in South Carolina. So the knowledge that people have about aliens would lead them to South Carolina to get a real look on what a UFO might look like so they would know if they saw one. Also for the people who claimed they have seen one can head there and do some research to see if it was really a UFO and aliens. Pendarvis is still alive today and the UFO Welcome Center is still up in running for anyone who would be interested in aliens and UFOs. Even thought it is a mess around the area it’s a historically safe place to go and visit.

Pendarvis has so much more knowledge on UFOs and aliens then the average person. He’s spent the last Twenty-Eight years of his life on building and learning about UFOs.

Men in Black

Author: CBow

When you hear “Men in Black,” you might think of Will Smith in the movie Men in Black. Some think of the Men in Black as a “secret” government agency, but most think of UFO’s (Unidentified Flying Objects.)Most people don’t even believe that Men in Black nor UFOs exist. The first story that launched conspiracies about the Men in Black dates back to June 27, 1947, involving a man named Harold Dahl. Dahl was out gathering logs, when he saw “six donut-shaped obstacles hovering” (Justin Sablich) over him in his boat. Sooner than later, one of the obstacles fell, scattering debris and water, killing Dahls dog. The next morning after the ordeal, Dahl was visited by a Man in Black who told Dahl not to speak of what he had witnessed, or else bad things would happen. The mysterious man was able to tell him what exactly had happened, frightening Dahl, which enticed him to tell others. He reached out to a magazine editor, who then reached out to a pilot named Kenneth Arnold, who had also experienced a UFO sighting. In July of 1947, “two Army A-2 Intelligence officers came to investigate.” (Sablich) The next day, when the officers were leaving, their plane crashed, killing both of them. Was this just a coincidence? Or did it have something to do with the Men in Black?

Albert K. Bender was the man who really kicked the Men in Black Conspiracy into full gear. He was a ufologist and conducted multiple counts of paranormal research. Because of his love for paranormal activity, he formed the International Flying Saucer Bureau (IFSB). In November of 1952, Bender was at a local movie theatre in Bridgeport, Connecticut, when he noticed a “strange man with glowing eyes observing him.” (Bielawa). Bender also noticed that there was an increasingly worsening stench of burning sulfur filling his attic. In July of 1953, he was paid a visit by three men in black suits. According to Bender, they communicated telepathically with him, demanding him to stop all UFO work and research. In October of 1953, the last issue from the IFSB Space Review
was published, including a cryptic message and warning of those who are engaged in “saucer work to be very cautious” (Bielawa). The IFSB was shut down by Bender, obeying the Men in Black that had threatened him.

Bender’s story attracted a UFO Magazine Publisher, Gray Barker. According to multiple sources, Barker was not considered the most factual reporter on UFO phenomena, as he was a “gifted writer with a gentle, understated sense of humor” (Radford). Barker wrote the book, “They Knew Too Much about Flying Saucers"
and included Bender's story inside. The book elaborated upon the Men in Black and UFO conspiracy. For some it expanded their belief of the Men in Black existence, and for some it was just a goofy, fictional, book. After this book was released, more and more people started encountering the Men in Black.

So, what could be a possible explanation behind the Men in Black? Are they really a result of paranormal activity, or do they have nothing to do with aliens at all? It has been reported that many people have experienced the Men in Black when experiencing sleep paralysis. According to Spencer Heathcliff Peters, sleep paralysis
“can be described as an inability to move or speak for several seconds after waking up from sleep.” Some say that when they have seen a Man in Black, they saw a black, shadowy figure. When some people experience sleep paralysis, they have also reported seeing a black, shadowy figure. In the 1970s, a survey was conducted by David F. Rudiak that studied the correlation between Men in Black sightings and sleep paralysis. The study concluded that there was no correlation between MIB sightings and sleep paralysis. Rudiak also found that since there was a large amount of people that had never seen a UFO but had an experience with Men in Black, most “alien abductions” are most likely sleep paralysis episodes.

Other resources suggest that the Men in Black aren’t, have never been, and never will be real. According to Steve Rose, “the UFO community is a textbook case of a gullible group susceptible to manipulation. Having spent too long watching the skies and the X-Files, it's implied, they'll readily swallow whatever snippet of "evidence" suits their grand theory.” Rose claims that movies and documentaries about UFO/paranormal activity are clearly fictionalized and made to feed into the imagination of ufologists. Rose states, “Rather than covering up the existence of aliens, could it be that the real conspiracy has been persuading us to believe in them?” Roses theory is that the Men in Black phenomenon/paranormal activity is not real, but the government wants us to think that they are. But why? Is there something that we don’t know that we should? Are movies just a coverup of something that’s really out there? Or are we just a bunch of paranoid weirdos? I guess we might not know until we see a UFO for ourselves.

UFO? Ghost lights? The Marfa Lights of Marfa, Texas

Author: Courtney Hicks

The Marfa Lights are a phenomenon that occurs very often in Marfa, Texas that baffles locals and lures in tourists from all over the nation. These are lights that appear during the evening and night, specks of lights that litter the desert skies varying from blue to red to yellow and often dart around the sky or split into various other lights. The locals have grown used to these lights, however many still speculate what they are. There are many theories, from the classic extraterrestrial related UFO, ghost lights, Native American spirits, and many other supernatural explanations. For example, Deborah Byrd explains in this article a popular theory- will-o-the-wisps. A “will-o-the-wisps,” otherwise referred to as ghost lights, derived from English folklore and are mostly seen in the English bogs, however that the term is related to these phantom lights that are unexplained. These lights were believed to have been a lantern or torch being held by a fairy or spirit, to lure travelers into foreign territory deeper into the bogs (Byrd). Byrd even goes as far as to mention the Marfa lights, explaining the darting of the lights and the fact that these lights appeared far before any cars were created, negating skeptics of the supernatural.

A photo drawn on DeviantArt by user Robjenx detailing the history of will-o-the-wisps.
With the supernatural, comes scientific counter explanation, Marc Lallanila explains in THIS (https://www.livescience.com/37579-what-are-marfa-lights-texas.html) article the scientific side that may shed light, elaborating that it could be the highway to headlight superior mirage. This theory claims that the desert heat causes visible gases that may reflect the headlights of cars traveling on the highways to and through Marfa. It could also be the theory of glowing gasses that appear in the desert heat. Regardless of these explanations, it doesn’t stop tour guides from profiting of the national attention it brings, being the highlight of Marfa (Lallanila).

These scientific perspectives, however, counteract the history of the lights, dating back all the way to the early 1800’s as the first documented sighting, and Native Americans believing the lights were the presence of spirits of fellow tribe members. Michael Hall points out in his Texas Monthly article that there are two versions of the lights: the real version, or the unexplained version that many locals can attest to, and the fake version, the hoaxes possibly created by locals to continue tourist revenue. He states that real version may be references in World War 2 Air force sightings as well as the Native Americans lore involving the spirits of the deceased that is related to these sightings (Hall).

Either way, the lights have been a mystery that can be seen often in Marfa, locals love talking, and tourists love venturing out to witness these lights and make their own judgement on what may be behind them. So much culture derived from this phenomenon that there is an annual festival in Marfa involving music, food, and activities all leading up to a mass viewing of the lights, waiting for there appearance! Many will continue to speculate the supernatural, many will continue to attempt debunking with scientific theory, however no one knows for certain what these lights are, and the mystery of it all keeps locals and tourists excited for the next sighting!

Professor Geller goes into detail on the story behind “will-o-the-wisps,” being inspired by blacksmith named Will whose mischievous soul was sent back onto earth by Saint Peter. That soul, which was condemned on Earth forever, impressed the devil into gifting Will coal on Winter nights which he then used as a lantern to deter and lure travelers during their journeys.
