The Lucky Number 7

When you think of a number one through ten what comes to mind? Most people would say seven.The number seven is the lucky number of the world that is in the roles of our everyday lives. Many do not know the significance of this prime,odd,unique number in the world we live in. A Daily Mail  article shares how the number is brought up in cultures and religions all around the world and the history behind this number and the relation back to ancient times. For musicians this number is important. There are originally 12 notes in a musical scale,but the most common way of grouping is with seven notes. (Derbyshire, Davide. Daily Mail).

This number is significant in the bible. When dating back to the creation of the world god created it within six days but when that seventh day arrived it was used as his rest day.Seven symbolizes completeness and perfection. That leads to the creation of our weekdays. A completed week consist of seven days.The number seven occurs multiple times in the bible for several different reasons. This number is said to bring about great things for us, challenge us, and even judge us. For sacrifice of an animal the bible states that they must be at least the age of seven before they are able to be sacrificed. (What is the Biblical Significance of the Number Seven).

When looking into the make of our world it is made of 7 seas and 7 continents. If you look into studies there are originally eight planets, but some do not think of Jupiter as a plant which takes it down to seven. When thinking of a rainbow, colors are usually all a person thinks of and the acronym “ROY G BIV” which is for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet but take into thought the number of letters there are seven right? When Isaac Newton first thought of the colors there were only five but later two were added. Anna Pukas the author of Express describes the world’s seven wonders: the Machu Picchu, Chichen Itza, Colosseum, the Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, the statue of Christ, and the rock city of Petra. The number seven will forever be the number of the world, and the luckiest of them all.When first used for the simplest of things no one thought it would have the reoccurrence it does. Randomly asking someone to give facts or information about this number the responses would mostly consist of the obvious, it is a prime odd number that is only divisible by itself. There are deeper ways of thinking into this number with interesting concepts and theories that relate together in creating our world the such a distinctive number.

Most of the things in our world comes in the number seven, meaning its seven of everything. For example, we have seven days in a week, seven seas, and seven continents. It is also seven colors of the rainbow and its also seven notes on the musical scale. In Judaism, the number seven is associated with creationism. The Jewish people also sit Shiva for seven days. The number seven also corresponds to Mosses birthday. Their are seven days of Passover. In the Jewish religion, the number seven is a reflection of completion. Members of the Judaic faith have a superstition about the fact that the verse of Torah contains seven words. The Jewish tradition, the number seven has a very sacred standing and is an indication of being without flaw. It is the number that cannot be defined because God accomplishes seven of something, he creates seven more. Seven times Seven is a euphemism for eternity, or without limitations, or the total possible outcomes. The "seed of life" represents six days of creation with the center circle representing the day of rest. For Americans, breaking a mirror means seven years of bad luck, so fur us this number is not so lucky. During ancient times, before the invention of the telescope, only seven planets were visible which were, the sun, moon, mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter. This is why many ancient cultures adopted seven Gods or Deities, example: The Chinese culture believe in seven Gods. The horoscopes Pisces and Cancer is associated with the number seven. In the Hindu culture, the bride and groom are to walk around a fire seven times taking seven steps and they are to say a vow at every seven steps. There are seven ancient wonders. The seven deadly sins include: Pride, Sloth, Greed, Lust, Envy, Anger, and Anger. There are also seven cosmic principles. For me the number seven really is not a lucky number. I never knew the number seven was so lucky for many people and their cultures. A article says a person who is seventh to something is spiritual, but not religious and seems shy, but not to be confused with having low self-esteem. It also says seven is tall and lanky but not athletic. The number seven is a very unique number that can deal with religion, a person, it also a number people use when getting married, and it even has some meaning with horoscopes. It also has something to do with people who gamble. The image of "Lucky 7" dice roll is usually made of the numbers 5+2, but it sometimes comes up as 4+3. The "Lucky 7" image derive from the dice game craps, where rolling 7 wins, and the dice that roll 7 is a symbol of "Gambler's Luck.

Why is six afraid of seven? Because seven “eight” nine! The lucky number seven appears in our lives as early as childhood. The lucky number could also reappear later on in life in activities such as gambling. There are countless reasons why a number could be “lucky.” The number reoccurs throughout many different religions and cultures. Ranging from Greek mythology and Native American ways of life to Christian beliefs, the magic number keeps popping up. There are worldwide known items that are grouped in sevens. For example, the seven seas, seven continents, seven colors in the rainbow, SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD , seven days in the week, etc. Everyone knows about all of these groups. Each of these is significant because they impact how we go about everyday life. For one reason or another, collectively as people, the number seven is well liked. In one article I found on the number on Psychology Today the author gives seven reasons why people like the number. Among those reasons are: seven is lucky, it’s a good playoff number, meaning that is five is too little but nine is too much, seven is a good medium, it’s magical, occurs throughout nature, etc. Also, seven has a more appealing sound compared to the other numbers. The example used in the Psychology Today article was “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” It rolls off the tongue much easier than a one syllable number. Different cultures, including some Native American tribes such as the Cherokees, acknowledge seven as an important number as well. For example, seven is a reoccurring theme in different myths and stories that are passed down. It also symbolizes the embodiment of being sacred and pure. Seven is very much associated with religion as well. God created the universe in seven days, there are seven deadly sins, etc. The number seven represents absolute perfection. It is also a great number when it comes to marketing. Because the marketers know people like the number seven, companies and premieres are scheduled for the seventh of a given month to make the event sound more appealing. For many reasons, seven is thought of as a number representing luck and perfection. The magic number is versatile with what it can symbolize in many different areas of life. Whether it’s Christianity or Native American tribes or day to day life, lucky number seven is a big part of everyone’s life whether we consciously know it or not.

The Seven Gates of Hell

In the outskirts of Pennsylvania, in an area called, Hellam Township, there was a strange event that occurred years ago, which is how this area earned its name, The Seven Gates of Hell. The story behind this tragedy begins with a mental institution or an insane asylum that was said to be both either haunted or burned down. According to an online article called, “The Downtowning Gates of Hell,” from Weird U.S., states that if you were to pass through these seven gates then you would go straight to hell, but nobody has ever made it past the fifth gate (Wheeler). The article also states that the gates were located in the woods off a scene of a tragic asylum fire, and also how the gates today look like fallen trees in the woods. In another online article called, “Seven Gates of Hell,” from Hellam Township, it explains how there are rumors about the wooded off area called Troute Run Road in the northwestern part of the township (Gov Office). It explains the rumor of how the insane asylum caught on fire, and the inmates were either burned, killed, or lived on to murder (Office). The article then switches views and explains how as the rumors all seemed true, no asylum had ever existed in that area, and a local doctor had only one gate which was to keep out trespassers (Office). In an Article called, “Seven Gates of Hell, York, Pennsylvania, from, Unexplained-Mysteries, is based on different people’s point of views from others who have actually been to the area. According to one of the recorders, the doctors were crazy and the asylum was a place of pain and torment (Winchester). The article explains how the doctors and patients that were not killed during the asylum fire, were gunned down by the Sherriff and the cops (Winchester).

Lucky Number Seven

The number seven is considered lucky and magical.  What history of the number gives it such controversial terms? It mostly started with religion. According to Dahloan Hembree, author of the article Lucky Seven? History of the Superstitions of the Number Seven,

The ancient Greeks considered the number seven to be lucky. They believed it to be the perfect number. The Arabs carried on this belief and built seven holy temples.  The Goths made sure they worshiped the seven deities.  The Japanese also had seven gods. Even the Scottish Masons made sure the number seven had relevance in their rites, and their aprons were made with seven tassels on them. (Dahloan)

The Bible also has numerous times when the number seven is mentioned.  Some people consider the number seven the luckiest and most powerful number in the Bible. (Astle)  In the Bible the world was created in seven days and in the battle of Jericho, the Israelite army was told to march around the city seven times.

Lucky seven also comes up when gambling or playing card games.  For example a 5+2 roll or a 4+3 is considered lucky.  It is also one of the most played numbers in a dice game.  

Many other facts and happenings contribute to the number seven being revered as lucky.  For instance there are the Seven Seas, The Seven Sisters, The Seven Ancient Planets, Seventh Inning Stretch, The Seven virtues, The Seven Deadly Sins, and The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. (Seven)  All have the number seven and all have it for a purpose.  It goes back to the culture and religious teachings of the time.  Everyone believed in the extraordinary and seven was considered to be holy, lucky, and magical.  For if something had seven associated with it, it was bound to be a good sign.  Seven has been considered unique and lucky since B.C. times.  The strangest part is that most of the ancient ideas and facts about the number seven still hold to be true today.  To the Greeks there were only seven planets.  This reinforced their thinking that somehow seven was special.  In modern times we have seven days in a week.  The U.S. declared its independence from Britain on the seventh month.  The Constitution itself has seven articles, planned or not, no one knows.  These are all examples of the number seven considered being lucky.  If good things happen when the number seven is involved wouldn’t you believe it too? 

Generally speaking seven has always been a lucky number for people.  It has also had very negative effects on people.  It all depends on your perspective and how you wish to view the number seven.  There are many other lucky numbers, such as 3 and 4, which make up the number seven.  Is it coincidence or not?  I don’t necessarily believe in “luck” or “magical” numbers however it’s usually more fun to go along with the superstitions.  You never know, it could be your lucky day.
